    Thanks guys for your advice. the topic does stray a little but I think I know that I need not send the car in just now and I will wait until Summer for the oil change. I will be at approx 7000 miles then.

      I would definitely not use 20-50W in our climate (unless my engine needed a rebuild ). It may well be acceptable, but it is not optimal.

        Me neither - unless the engine is either rattling worn or from an era when manufacturing was to much greater tolerances.
        A 50 weight is just unnecessary fluid friction - at a time when the OEMs are moving toward 20 weights.

        Strangely though, the V10 that revs like crazy in the BMW M5 uses a 60 weight! Don't know why. Possibly to counter the high inertial forces.
