Smart fortwo Going in Safe Mode when Driving
My smart for two is just entering safe mode without any previous indication. It mainly happens at slow speeds when the triangle with an explanation mark appears on the dash and does not let my drive unless i restart the car. I took it the a Mercedes shop and they said i had a loose connection, but that did help the problem! What could be the issue? Thanks

600cc, 700cc or 1000cc?
What circumstances does the car enter safe mode? Accellerating, pulling away, braking, cruising along?
Does it happen only in certain conditions (wet weather?)? -

Its a 600cc model. It enters safe mode mainly when I'm driving very slowly, e.g. when I'm driving in slow moving traffic. I put it through a computer test by they have not located the problem it. I don't know what to do next :/Originally posted by 137699 View PostComment

This really difficult. When you say 'Mercedes Shop' what do you mean, and computer?? What does that mean? It needs a smart specialist (smart not Merc) with a star machine, anything less than the information from that is a needle in a haystack!Originally posted by andrewg View Post

Being a 600cc engine it'll be a 2002 or earier model which has the simpler "Trust" stability system.
As far as I'm aware the only time the [!] light comes on & power cut back, is if one wheel spins faster than the rest or if your cornering to fast & the yaw sensor kicks in.
The thing is, when the fault goes, the [!] light goes out & the engine power is restored without restarting the engine.
Personally I'd be looking at the reluctor rings (common fault) & wheel sensors. Also the yaw sensor.
I would expect there to be an error code logged, which needs to be read with a "Star machine" to pinpoint your fault.
The other thing you will probably get if it's a reluctor ring/sensor is the ABS will be working as you brake. This you will feel as a vibrating feeling of the brake pedal as you almost come to a halt.

Lateral acceleration sensor could have come off its bracket due to rust or faulty sensor due to ingress of water through cracks in the potting compound.Comment

its a 2004 model and the fault 99% of the time the fault occurs when the car is rolling slowly freely without pressing any accelartion or brake. When I mean mercedes shop I mean a Mercedes and Smart specialist. I still have not found the reason to this safe mode. It happens mostly when I am in slow moving traffic.
