  • New to me Smart SilverPulse, to service or not ?

    Hi guys,

I have just bought 2 days ago an 04 Smart SilverPulse Cab with 38k miles on the clock.
    Immaculate inside and out

The car was last serviced 600 miles ago, though this was 2 years previous in 2012
The previous owner has had the car parked in his garage and barely used for the last 2 years
apart from getting it MOT'd each year
This is all verified by the service history and previous MOT's
My question is this, normally when I buy a new car I get it serviced for piece of mind.
But with this one having only covered 600 miles BUT 2 years ago since it was last done I'm not sure what to do ?

I was contemplating getting a C service due to the mileage and the previous was stamped as an A
Though this was done by a main dealer but not a Smart one
So not sure what was actually done

Everything on the car works as it should but with being a Cab model I am not sure if the soft top runners will have been greased, hood tensioned etc on the last service with them not being Smart franchised
Though this too works flawlessly and is quiet as a mouse not grinding noises or anything
    So ....
To service or not to service ?

I was considering using a local-ish to me ( They're based in Ackworth near Wakefield ) place that do Smart servicing as they seem quite competitive

    prestigeservice

does anyone have any knowledge of them ?

If anyone can advise what they recommend

    Thanks...
    Dean

Servicing is yearly minimum, so yes. Underused cars often pose more problems than well used ones.

Everyone says service at a predetermined time interval if the prescribed service mileage hasn't been reached.
I wonder if they can tell us what exactly will be changed in the service that would have deteriorated while doing nothing.

NB. Oil easily has a shelf life of 3 years. It's millions of years old anyway and usually it will outlast its container.

So, what needs to be changed?

Not sure a smart main dealer would've touched any part of the roof on a service either.

I believe from what I've read hood tensioning and greasing is part of all the services..

If the last service was not done by a smart specialist there is a fair chance the wrong oil was used -I'd not bother doing a full service but an oil change would certainly be a prudent starting point.

The most vulnerable to aging components on a car are the components made from rubber type materials - especially if they are exposed to sunlight.
In this case I'd keep an eye on the alternator belt for any signs of cracking or fraying being ready to replace it if there are any doubts. I'd also scrupulously keep an eye out for leaks underneath the car. Seals can dry out when a car sits. Look for coolant anywhere but particularly beneath where the water pump is situated, oil leaks around the rear of the car (driveshaft and crankshaft oil seals the most vulnerable here) including around the bellhousing area lest the gearbox input shaft leaks (early detection could prevent clutch contamination with oil). Also, keep an eye around the wheels for brake leakages and any odd feeling (particularly a 'long pedal') when using the brakes should be checked out early. Monitoring brake fluid and coolant levels will help.

None of the above - should they occur, and it's only a possibility that they could - are likely to be detected in a service. Skip the service but keep your eyes peeled for leaks.

Had a full service done by Sam from forsmart
Plus a couple of other jobs
                Wheel bearing
                Rear brake pipe
                Brakes bled, cleaned and adjusted.
Only thing he didn't do was change the fuel filter as he brought the wrong one with him
                No biggy
He did offer to come back and sort that when he was passing next
Been trying to contact him for past 3 weeks though as he was going to email me the invoice and a sticker for my service book as he forgot that too.
                Still no reply
I know the emails are getting there as I receive a reply from forsmart stating so
Over all I was pleased and happy with everything he did
He was here ages doing it all
Only let down by the small issues listed above
Hopefully he'll get back in touch
Would be a shame if he doesn't
