Something is knackered. Most likely wires where they flex in way of hinges. Fit a padlock to keep car safe until you get it fixed.

the lock on the passenger door is only to open that door and not lock the car.

are there any beeps when you lock the car? can you lock the door by pressing the lock button on the dash? it could be the wiring in the hinge that has broken or the latch has failed.

There are no beeps and the door will not lock from the dash button...it seems the mechanism will activate with the door open because when i have the door open and press the central locking i cannot close the door

Are you sure the door is closing fully?
There is the first latch & then the second. It may be the door striker has moved in & it's only latching on the first latch.
If you gently close the door you can feel for the first latch. Then push it harder to engage the second latch. Compare it to the other door to see if they feel the same.
          Hope that makes sense?
