  • Smart engine help needed ASAP

Im attempting to save atleast one of my smarts. I have a 2002 coupe and a 2003 cab.
The cab is all fine apart from engine... the coupe has alot of problems and been through lab testing hell, but the engine an gearbox is fine. My question is can i take the coupe gearbox and engine and replace it into the cab. Or is it alot more complicated than that?
    Many thanks

First off, welcome to the forum!

My question is can i take the coupe gearbox and engine and replace it into the cab.
If you are swapping over the engine + gearbox at the same time and they are the same size of engine, which I suspect they are given the years mentioned (are they both 599cc?), I can't see why not. I am not aware of the engine/gearbox being mounted any differently between a coupe and a cabrio (though someone else more experieced may weigh in on that).

It's the electronics I'd be wary of - MEG ECU and SAM.
Someone here should be in a better position than me to advise.
      Where are you based?

Since January 1, 2003 is with SAM unit?
Smart 2002 is certain with the ZEE unit .
Rayrose ,What drive does Smart 2003 have? That (1)http://www.fq101.co.uk/how-to-guides...0-the-zee-unit or that(2) http://www.fq101.co.uk/how-to-guides...50-sam-removal ?

Dover - according to their profile. Or to put it another way... nowhere near any recognised smart specialist.

You can put a complete (accept the pre-cat heater) 700cc engine + 700cc clutch kit in a 600cc car .
            Dont use a 700cc gearbox in a 600cc car.

Sounds like the OP wants to do the opposite i.e. replace a tired 700cc engine with a good 600cc engine. Will probably run, but fuelling isn't going to be ideal using the standard 700cc ECU and the 600 ECU can't be swapped over. He would need to keep the 700cc gearbox as well, assuming that bolts up ok to the 600cc engine.

I'd rebuild the 700cc engine personally.

600 engine will fit and run
Ignore the extra pipe work for the exahaust heater
                Use the 700 clutch
                Use the 700 gearbox
                Injectors are the same
