Hi everyone I’m new to owning a smart and today it started knocking so I took a look and found this had come off. Any ideas how to fix it and what it is?
Looks like the auxiliary air valve.
To its right there should be a black plastic bodied air pump mounted on the subframe. The pump supplies air for the cat during the first 30 seconds or so after cold start up. That valve administers the air from the pump to the exhaust manifold.
Mountings must be broken before it fell off. It can be dispensed with I think (check FQ101 website for details) but needs a blanking plate and different (length) bolts to do that. Probably better to fix it properly. Expect corroded and broken bolts.
But, given that the new MOT rules are much tougher on exhaust emissions kit, removing this may cause a test failure due to its absence even though the emissions test can be passed with the engine at operating temp. Check the exact wording of MOT test ie, removal or tampering with emissions equipment.
