  • Loss of power and smell of petrol

I have a 2003 Smart Fortwo 450 700cc and recently have been getting the smellof petrol inside car and it’s more under acceleration. Also on 3 occasions since the petrol smell started the car has lostpower 4 times while accelerating to 70 mph on motorway. Any assistance is very much appreciated.

A leak - obviously. Which needs to be cured ASAP before there is a major fire.
Trace all lines between fuel tank and injectors. If you can't do this yourself, get it into a garage - pronto.

Perhaps advisable to carry fire extinguishers just in case.

In Ro there is a legal obligation to have a fire extinguisher but now it would be better to have more and bigger is better.

Seals on injectors fail if they are not handled properly.
Another possible cause is the failure of a seal before the intake manifold.
When was the last time the tank was ventilated (via diagnosis)?
Is a visual inspection of the engine necessary - some photos?

I’ve had a good look for leaks but couldn’t find any but will check again and smell of fuel is only under acceleration and not when driving around town. I’m not at home for a few weeks now but will check the above things that you have all mentioned.
        Thanks.

Check the rubber seal on the inside of the fuel cap - could very likely have perished.

            .
That's the smell - what of the leak?

The problem solved, why else to tell others? Years ago it was a saying: after seeing the bags in the cart you no longer know anyone.
Anyway, a few weeks is not home, that's not interesting. Interesting is just the problem.

Dacia 1300 (Renault 12) had this problem; fuel tank was inside the body but the Smart is outside.
