  • Steering on my 2004 FourTwo suddenly became very stiff.

Out of the blue it became quite hard to turn the steering wheel, and it wouldn't self-centre. My mechanic tells me that the universal joint on the end of the steering column has seized and he has
to replace the whole steering column. Estimated cost, all up, about $A1500 (750 British pounds).
Has anyone else encountered this problem and, if so, is there any cheaper way to fix it?

The universal joint can be replaced by some one capable.
As you haven't filled in the location part of your profile, it is a bit difficult to point you towards some where local, but here is a cheap place to buy a suitable universal joint:-

I just fitted a new lower UJ this morning. Got a thread about it on thesmartclub.
