  • Rattling noise. Looking for a workshop near Hastings for possible clutch replacement

    Morning all!

Friend has a 450 which has done about 90k miles & has developed a noise from the engine which you can hear in neutral at idle as a rattling noise from the clutch area (I stuck my head underneath). Like rattling nuts in a tin can. The car drives normally apart from the auto mechanism being less good at changing gears now so she is manually selecting ATM which is working fine so far.

A quick search tells me that sometimes one of the springs or other bit of metal in the clutch assembly can break & rattle around in the housing. I might be completely wrong but the auto issue could be connected to the clutch going out of spec. Perhaps ;-)

Anyhoo, the car lives in Hastings & I'm wondering if any members here could recommend a workshop nearby that could do the business, ideally with the experience to judge what the problem is before pulling things apart. We've been to smartcarspecialist.com in Guildford before but it's quite a schlep.

    Cheers :-)

If you can firm up the above diagnosis (this issue has been extensively discussed on this forum previously - mainly a dialogue between mottofree and Tolsen IIRC) then....

......the above won't be necessary. I would expect mainstream garages are now more aware of self adjusting clutches as they are paired with troublesome dual mass flywheels.(See LUK website for more info).

Thanks Thrumbleux I appreciate the pointer, interesting thread (mottofree/Tolsen).

But this isn't going to be a DIY fix, I really need a workshop in the south coast area to send my friend to, if there is one with particular Smart experience :-)

Easiest fix is new clutch/ flywheel assembly.

If indeed the clutch is the cause.

What kind of Smart is this about? (gasoline or diesel). The clutch types differ from gasoline to diesel and:
-at gasoline (0.6) I found the tabs of clutch broken but never at diesel.
Before replacing the clutch package, check the actuator tension. Note that the clutch lever may be faulty - check.
        An audio clip is desirable.
