  • Recommended Exhaust

    Hi all,
The exhaust on our 2003 450 is starting to resemble a teabag.
The specialist has warned us against the generic after market systems you can get and we're told 'proper' MB supplied ones are £600+
Has anyone got any experience - good or bad, or advice on what to get / avoid?
Ebay seems to range from £100 to £400 for seemingly the same item so any thoughts would be appreciated.
    cheers.

Cheapest from ebay works fine - just don't expect it to last anything like as long as the original. 2-3 years and the box rots out of them.
The Lambda sensor usually sits slightly lower on them - but the wiring stretches the gap - just.
You will have to remove the Lambda sensor from your old exhaust - or budget for a new one.

I had an Ebay one fitted for about a year. First thing was the pipe diameter was bigger on the manifold flange, which made it difficult to get a spanner/socket on the nuts & I had to bend the gearbox bracket as it had been welded on in the wrong place. Other than that it fitted perfectly...lol.
The thing I couldn't live with was the noise. It wasn't exceptionally loud, it just droned so much at certain engine speeds. I even made an exhaust tip along the lines of a glass pack silencer, it changed the note but didn't take away the drone!
In the end I bit the bullet & bought an original exhaust from Smart (£425 in June 2019), bliss!

Have you actually gone to Smart /MB and found out for your self how much a genuine exhaust costs? Not one which has an extra mark up on it?

          Thanks all.
To be honest we haven't approached Smart themselves yet. We have a couple of months to sort it and I wanted to see if there were any 'tricks' we'd missed. My concern was what MrT experienced and similar to what we'd been warned about. Had something similar on a C class Merc. Worked fine but the sound was awful.
We were told it was in the £600 range from MB but £425 sounds lot closer to sensible.
I'll make a couple of calls.

At £425 much of the advantage of a £100 (if they are still that) exhaust is negated by the much longer life of the smart part.
Whatever you decide on, don't leave ordering until the last minute. Supply chains are all over the place right now.

              I ordered mine on Ebay...lol.

Just sent them a message & they quoted me a price, deal done. (That was delivered price BTW).
