  • Smart Fortwo Problem

Hello, I have a problem with my 2008 Smartfortwo that was accidently towed in reverse gear (not by me I hasten to add) for perhaps a mile or so, The car will start run and drive through all the gears but the idle is really erratic with a bit of a rattle on startup, Can anyone advise please

At what speed was it towed and in what direction (ie forwards or backwards)?

Did the back wheels turn round at all? In either direction whilst it was being towed? Nice big bill for the insurance company of the the towing company. Likely wrecked the clutch by your description on rattle at start up - could also have wrecked the engine via he cam chain.
My Smart has a sticker on the window to say "DO NOT TOW" - Flat bed truck only if needing to be recovered.

I suspect engine timing has gone off spec. Never turn an engine backwards. Towing in reverse gear will surely have the potential of screwing up timing.

Have engine timing checked, and if found off spec, get it corrected.

If the engine was rotating backwards - no oil supply?

Yes, no oil to lube bearings when engine rotates wrong way.
