  • EMC Light

Well after only having my new 84 BHP cabrio for a couple of weeks the EMC light came on so called the dealership they said call smart assist they got aa to me who plugged in laptop and reported:

P0012 camshaft sensor code he reset the light road tested it and cam eback saying my god they go well dont they and left his paper work with me that stated to monitor and advise dealer.

That was at 8212 milage on the 19th /9 then at 8524 miles on the 25 /9 it came back on again so back to smart assist another laptop man and another report:
OBD check code P0012 camshaft sensor timing over retarded bank 1
code cleared as requested have dealer check replace sensor.

So booked into dealer who had it for the day phoned me up at one stage to ask if it was remaped as there reading on there machine were high, i said not to my knowledge but it is an 84BHP engine he said fine and left it at that phoned latter to say all done and that there machine was at fault so not to worry about the is it remapped question and that readings were fine. He said they had done a software upgrade to the EMC and gear change.

Upon collection i asked what had been done and he just said a softwear upgrade was all they could do as although I had been seen twice with this emc light it was not on when it went in and they had been told to do the upgrade first before any thing else ????

This all sounds rather odd to me and i do feel the car is now always in a gear that is to high as if the engine is now labouring but that may be me and all in the mind thing, however i would love to know what this upgrade is all about if any one knows and just why a P0012 should come up as a fault in the first place.

I phoned the dealer when i got home to report my concern about the gear change and also that the seat belts now no longer retracted ????? and that i wanted a report of what had been carried out. He said he couldn't give me a written report as all warranty work is just done and sent of to smart. I still wanted the report i told them and they said they would see if they could do a copy for me when i take the car back in to have the seat belt situation rectified.

Still love the car and all the car is about and still want to do a few things to it to make it my own as such.

Thanks in advance of any response.

    Re: EMC Light

of course they should be able to provide you with details of what was changed, you would have had to sign the warranty thing anyway (I usually have to), so you can check then

or just ask for a copy for your records..

I'd insist the job is properly diagnosed and worked on as needed, maybe try another dealer if they are no good.
He said they had done a software upgrade to the EMC
    Yeah right

sounds to me like they don't know what they're doing and are trying to bull**** you

YEP both of them and they were fine before it went in, I had to actually place the belt back through the thing on the seat so they must have had some thing out or been into the engine bay with the seats pushed forward or what ever.

Ahhh another "completely statisfied" mercedes dealer customer. A common pattern is forming here, like we didn't already know!

Did you have one of those oh so arrogant cards hanging from the RVM with the tick by the 10 on the 1 to 10 scale?!

I have great delight in sometimes taking a pen to those and returning it to the service desk operative. Sometimes with the tick scrubbed out and a tick next to a more appropriate value or sometimes with an "un" added before the "satisfied"

Which dealer was this by the way?

I hope you get the car sorted soon but please be assured, getting the cars fixed are less trouble outside of warranty... because then you can take it to an expert who know about smarts - i.e. an independant specialist!:p

I often wonder what the hell they do with seat belts at merc , I've had the belt removed from the slide bit on the seat a few times in the past , leave the damn thing alone !

I rang the number once and asked for the guy on the card, and guess what....... he'd left

So I asked 'why the * are you putting these cards in then and you've got no-one setup to deal with people who read the text and have a complaint and want to feedback something to him?

Ah well we're getting some more printed.....

              Re: EMC Light

So I wonder who is going to be able to tell me why or what P0012 camshaft sensor code is all about.

The softwear upgrade if it was also had some thing to do with the gearchange and after being out in the car today I can honestly say its useless it always seams to be in to higher gear and almost labors the engine when i put my foot down to pull away.

I will get around to going back to the stealership and getting my seat belts sorted and ask for a copy of the work sheet and ask to speak with the smart monkey that did the upgrade.

Another point is if tit was P0012 camshaft sensor code problem WHY for goodness sake would they do an upgrade on the softwear for the gear change ??????

                Re: EMC Light

If they had flashed the ecu, would it have wiped any map that may have been on there? I'm wondering whether it was originally remapped, and you're perhaps just not used to the characteristics of the car. Mine's an 84bhp, and I can't get into fourth until 40+. My girlfriend's 1.2 Punto will happily go into 5th at 30mph. Have you a way of driving another 84bhp, a genuinely unfettered one? If you're anywhere near Surrey, you're welcome to stop by and compare. Perhaps the dealer has one knocking around.

If it had been remapped, and maybe poorly remapped, perhaps that could have brought about the code? Just thinking out loud here, mind.

                  Re: EMC Light

Thanks for the thought this is the sort of thing that is crossing my mind and that the dealership asked about remapping make me think it may have been done. He did even say GOD it goes like a rocket so i presume some one drove it to make that sort of comment.

I feel its gear change is all wrong as once it goes up a gear it stays there for a long time on the way back down the gears. its doing around 12-1300 at 30 MPH and if i try to pull away it takes for ever.

I traded in a 71 BHP pulse for this one and that was so much better than this but this one was GREAT and did drive so well until they did the " softwear upgrade" but I still don't understand WHY they would have to do that for a fault that said camshaft error ????

I am going to phone them on Monday to book it in to have the seat belt situation sorted and at that time will also ask for a full report of what was done and ask again WHY it had to have a software upgrade.

Thanks for the thoughts out loud it all helps.

                    Re: EMC Light

to my knowledge not many people are doing the tuning at present perhaps try ringing a few with the reg od your car and see if they have came across it in the past? I know one company would redo it if this sort of situation occured ?

                    Regards
                    Paul
