OK - I've just been out and hooked up my kit to a 56 plate Passion Coupe to re-check so bear in mind that the same may not work on an early car with zee unit or indeed on a 451

    1-connect car and star
    2-go to "systems"
    3-go to engine/meg
    4-go to control unit adaptations
5-find the box that starts - Check coding'Activated shift mode after switching on ignition' and double click
6-double click the blue bar on screen with 'coding' at the top
7-select 'automatic shift mode from the options in the drop down box

The rest is up to you!

PS - you won't get it to show without having the car connected! Been there - done that!

PPS - maybe a useful one for Kane to add to Evilution with his usual profession touch added!

The immediate solution is to remember what car I'm in or drive it in manual on the paddles :-)

Mr Big would have offered to sort it for a fee had there been a way to change the default mode.

                    You really are a sphincter

The owner of said car wants to sort it himself
                    He has star
He is a chief tech or what ever the qualification is.
So due to your stupidity of thinking its a roadster all of your input is invalid especially the

"bring it to the wanky service centre in scotchland where you will fix it for pints of wierd beer and bore you with stories of my diesel smart ! "

Based on that post Mr Big I conclude you do not have any fix either.

So - having thrown the cat amongst the pigeons, has anybody else tried to do it and found something different or is it something that's been lurking in the background just needing exposure?

Can it be done on an early car?

Can it be done on a 451?

Have just checked on my 2002 Smart 450 Cabrio Cdi following your guidance. Can't change default as there is no option in control unit adaptations for it.

No need to change it anyway since whoever did the logic for this car was sufficiently smart to program in last selected mode for manual/ auto selection.

OK so perhaps it's only possible on later cars or maybe a different version of Star.

Do you know anybody with a 451 that would let you have a look as this thread is about setting one of those up?

OP is stated to have his own Star so better that he checks on his own Smart car.
