Key will not turn in ignition

My Smart fourtwo has been a great car will no problems to shout about but this morning after using the car yesterday when I put key into ignition the key will not turn, Gear leaver is in neutral, Have tried second key and is the same, mhd on a 12 plate with 14300 miles on the clock, any ideas please

Key Barrel knackered, or something external to the barrel impeding its movement.

You'll need to strip down the area to find out the root cause

I have seen debris fall into the key slot and jam the mechanism before

A vacuum cleaner nozzle might sort that out if its not been crushed into the slot too much

Going to try vacuum and if no luck I will start to strip it today will report later, fingers crossed Thanks for replies,

Sorted after vacuuming and then high air pressure blow gun and more vacuum no joy but plenty of dust muck and sand out of lock I striped it down to basics, Turns out was gear lever was jammed between neutral and reverse and locked so key barrel had a lot of pressure on it, IE no movement at all. knowing this I used a lot more humph than before both on key and lever and all became loose, so after putting all back together it works great and all nice and clean,

Buy some 'lock oil', and puff some in there where the key goes.


(its not oil as we know it, it's basically graphite powder, and it's like magic, don't use anything else)

There are plenty of occasions on forums in general, when we could pick people up for their spelling eg their/there/they're ...... but we don't ;-)
