  • Smart 451 MHD 2009 Alternator issue

Back in August I took my 2009 Smart 451 MHD car to a local garage to have it serviced and also have the v belt replaced because it was past due. From August until a couple days ago everything seemed to be fine but one morning the car would not start straight away all the lights would come on but it would take 5 or 6 times turning the ignition to start the car plus it would make noise, a noise that was coming from the v belt struggling to turn.I opened the engine cover and I noticed that every time I would try to turn the engine on the inner part of the alternator pulley would turn but the outer part wouldn’t. I took the car to the garage ( keep in mind that the garage is not a smart specialist) and they said that the inner part of the pulley should not spin independently and they could see welding marks between the inner and outer part of the pulley. They said that someone tampered with the pulley in the past and I need a new alternator...It all seem a bit weird to me...any ideas?...is the pulley consisted of two moving part or one?...

I thought the MHD had solid alternator pulley and my advice is to buy new pulley from Smart.

On the MHD the alternator & starter motor is the same item. So it would make sense that a broken pulley would stop the engine starting.
As Tolsen says, just get a new pulley from Smart. I think the complete unit would be rather expensive & not necessary.
