  • Smart ForTwo 451 MHD will not start

    Hello All,

I have a 2009 Smart ForTwo MHD that will not start. On turning the key I hear the starter motor clicking, I have external lights and internal cabin lights so there are some electrics, but the dash is dead - no LCD display and no warning lights. We tried a jump start but made no difference. Thanks in advance for your ideas on possible causes.

Do you mean you hear the starter motor solenoid clicking but the engine not turning over?
When you have that happening, what are the lights on dash doing? Do they dim?

Have you checked the fuse for the instrument cluster, I think it's number 12 ? Checked the battery voltage ? Once you get the dash lights back on you may see what issues are displayed, 3 bars, EML light etc..

The MHD doesn't have a starter solenoid and motor, it has a starter/alternator. The clicking may be the starter/alt trying to turn but without enough battery power. Charge or replace battery.
