  • 898 turbo engine

It would seem this is the basis (if not just it on a plate) for the turbo engine that's in the C453
    http://www.smartpit.de/smart-fortwo-...ue-motor-sein/

    OK, translated to english:

and a really cool video explaining all the tech elements of what's in it

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNvRhWL1stQ

Seems it's been there ready for the smart for quite a time.... power data matches to a tee... we need some actual engine pics to prove it further.

and it's got a funky beat , what more could you want

The Renault engine has been generally well received when fitted to Renaults and a Dacia but note in the articles it is still upright. It took further development to allow it to be reclined to fit under a floor.
Renault must have had low overall height in mind though for FWD applications even (pedestrian impact) hence the offset crankshaft. Not obvious at first glance why that permits a lower engine but it plays to a 3-cylinder strength.

Apologies in advance for crappy smartphone pic, but it gives you an idea of the 898 turbo and access (more of it !)
(I've had to shrink it cos of the forum limits of 650x650 grrr, who chose that ! lol )

Looks good. The more access the better.

I was going to have a look at the engine before my last test drive and realised it had far more locking down bolts on the cover than just one on the 451, so did not bother.

I will take a closer look when I test drive the convertible when it comes out next March.

Looks like a flattened variant of the Renault TCe 90 engine.

I want a diesel. Petrol is too flammable. Should be banned in vehicles used on public roads.

How many cars engines do actually you see on fire?

Don't answer that as I saw a guy last year at the side of the road with a very small extingusher trying to open his bonnet on an old Clio with flames pouring out. Madness!

I would have been running the other way and to ell with the car, just dial 999, as I can always claim the cars insurance.
