  • SAM unit Corrosion solution

    Hey guys and gals.

I have recently discovered water damage on my roadster. I have pulled the SAM unit out and it has corrosive damage. There is a guy locally who baths these I assume in isopropyl alcohol. I am wondering if that is my best chance to get it working. Also wondering if he disassembles the boards from within the sam unit in the process, could it require re programming.

Bathing it , submerging it even in ISO, isn't gonna do jack **** if the copper is corroding … it'll need rework , replacement of components and track bypassing …. IF you're lucky.!

Water has a nasty effect on copper, (once it gets a grip) and can kill the board completely.

Conformal coating (sprayed on, both sides) is a reasonable defence against moisture (on good componenture (just made that word up) will not do it any harm at all) , but it's not a 100% defence. For a start it will not help at connectertage (just made that up too)

Thanks. Well the type of rework is hard to do. In that there are no smart specialists here in Australia. So I can go to a generic company that handles merc or automotive modules. Having spoken to them, they said they are happy to 'service' it but cannot guarantee a fix since they do not smart specific tests. This they have quoted $500 which remains a gamble. A new SAM unit plus programming here would cost me probably $1200 or so.

a new SAM fitted & programmed by Mercedes cost me £600 a few years ago so your guess of $1200 probably isn't that far off.

Well get this > my estimate is based on importing it from Smart stuff (https://www.smart-stuff.parts/452-ro...ol/450-452-sam), installing it myself and getting Mercedes to program it.
If I just take my car straight to Mercedes their quote for a new sam unit installed is $3000 Australian.

Ouch! That's taking the p***. It'd take half an hour at the most to physically fit ....... no idea how long STAR takes, but it can't be that long.

So here's the thing. I used isopropyl alcohol, cleaned the SAM as much as I could, left it a day and reinstalled it. Its all working except the left indicator will not stop flashing - any ideas ?
I would also like to know whether in your views I should buy a spare SAM to keep incase of emergency.

                Thanks.

Get in contact with Tony (tune4performance) , and ask of the options for repair/software-upgrade of the SAM unit.
He did a few for me , very good and no problems with them.

You think for the issue I have had, it is worth sending to the UK for service ?

That's what mine was doing too before I replaced the SAM

So either I haven't cleaned I properly or I was wondering if the connectors coming from the car into the SAM may also need a clean. hmm

I am not an engineer but just with the indicator failing, I'd prefer to try to make it work!
