Re: Airbags / Airbag light

Re: Airbags / Airbag light

Thought train moving onto the next station...

Has anyone fitted the cartridge that contains the ABS / ESP magical gubbins to an aftermarket non-smart steering wheel?

I'm guessing this would be a bit similar to the FQ101 guide about fitting the carbon Brabus steering wheel but without the airbag.

Re: Airbags / Airbag light

I had an array of lights on after the crash

and the airbag light was on all the way home - it's also a pain driving your car with a blown airbag I can tell you. Cops were happy for me to drive the car home though - less hassle for them I assume and it was only 2.5 miles.

Just as I reached home the temperature warning light came on!

The airbag light was only reset after a trip to Smart of bristol by the bodyshop.

I think that the resistor for the seat to disable the airbag would work - if it's automatically set to 'off' the ecu won't go searching for a faulty bag, surely!

That's what I'd hope but it depends on the sequence it checks things I guess.

I was hoping to find out for definite first rather then spend £50 on the child seat switch, disconnect the passenger airbag and then find that i get the permanent light any way.

PS I've tried to give you all rep for answers but it's telling me to spread it around a bit first!

Re: Airbags / Airbag light

Phil

richg disabled his airbag with a resistor. Would it not make sense to speak to him about the resistor and then try - worst thing that'll happen is a visit is required to smart of wolverhampton for a light reset (although Wellsmart can do those now too).

Re: Airbags / Airbag light

Thanks, didn't know RichG had already disabled his airbag.

Maybe I should try disconnecting his passenger airbag cables to see what happens.

Re: Airbags / Airbag light

Rich had the ISOfix kit in his car not a resistor (and afaik it's not disabled)!! he's unsure if it also needs to be enabled at the SAM. we know the resistances for the on/off just not the details on the sam unit - this is why we haven't published it yet

Let me know if you want to borrow me and my car for a day to experiment.

Re: Airbags / Airbag light

I had a similar situation with my MINI. I was fitting Spacro seats meaning that the side-airbags were gone. I tried a resistor which didn't work out. The final solution was to get BMW to disable the side-airbags, for which they made me sign a "I won't sue if I get killed" letter. Worked fine after that...
FWIW, although not much use to folks here, the guide I did is here - http://punkey.net/mini/howto-seats.html
