  • This site, it's rules, and the inhabitants

    I'm becoming increasingly frustrated and disillusioned with the whole smart scene, never have I met such a political, intolerant and frankly unreasonable group of people.

    During my years looking after this site, I and the team have put countless hours into trying to make it an informative, friendly, and sociable site.

    I'm fully aware that it is impossible to please everyone all the time, and it's not something that I have actively pursued.

    However, the snipes, digs, back stabbing, and bitching has reached a point at which I am beginning to wonder why we even bother.

    My responses to the major snipes follow;

    Censorship
    The site is not censored as a matter of course. I'd very much like to be able to log in, and just be one of the crowd, I don't enjoy dealing with members abusing each other, posting material that is not in the spirit of the site, or its rules, or clearing up mess. The site is also supported by sponsors, without them the site would not be tenable, and we as an admin team must protect their interests. in 99% of cases, moderation is as a direct result of our members reporting an item as unsuitable.

    Rules
    The rules in place are there to support the spirit in which the site should be used and are non negotiable. They are a condition of your membership of the site, and if you do not agree to them, then you have the option to stop logging into the systems! Those members that repeatedly transgress will be removed.

    Keyboard warriors
    We do have many strong personalities on-line, and in many cases these characters are completely different when in a face to face situation. It is down to the community of smartManiacs as a whole to deal with these people. You will find that in ignoring and not responding to their posts, that they will change their behaviour, or walk away from the site.

    Trolls
    These are easier to deal with and will be removed by the admin team once identified.

    If you have an issue with how the site is run, the application of the rules, or even a positive suggestion for the site, then please feel free to contact me. I do not want to see calls for threads to be pulled, posts moderated, etc., to be within threads. There is a 'Report Post' button for that express purpose. We always take note of reported posts and many time we act on them. Sometimes we don't. That isn't because we are ignoring them, but because we have considered them and decided not to act. Of course, the best form of moderation is self-moderation and something that we should always try to practice. Maniacs should be a pleasant place to be, a home from home for smart enthusiasts, not a venue for bitching-fests and back stabbing.

    The admin team and I DO listen to what is said, and as it happens we have been putting in a huge amount of work to address some of the issues that have been raised. If we had less to do in terms of keeping the site in line then we could get on and release some of the changes earlier.

    Finally, if anyone thinks they can do a better job, then please let me know - I'd be more than happy to listen to ideas.

    Now how's about we all start acting like the adults we profess to be and get back to the enjoyment of our cars, and the assistance of others, rather than fighting, biting, scratching and kicking?
