  • 2x10" Subs in a Roady Cab?

I've seen this done with 2 behind the seats but why not in a shallow box in the boot its so small anyway why not fill it with something usefull if i need to get the engine it could be removed quickly and its the normal place for subs in a car anyway also i was thinking of having 2x 6x9s behind the seats mounted to a peice of mdf allong with amps for the subs and the car speakers i should be able to fit a set of 6x9s there without too much trouble id of thought im just concious that the subs might drown out the front speakers even if they are amped without some fill from the back.

Just to let you know where im up to allready ive got a new sony headunit with front, rear and sub out, Polk Audio front door speakers and a sony 2 channel amp for the subs and a phoenix gold 4 channel amp for the front doors and the 6x9s. Ive also got a power cap 1 farad one so that i dont melt the altanator which im guessing is gonna be a really small jobbie.I really want it to be loud so that if im at a show its ubearable to sit in but ok to stand next to if you get my drift Im not sure if this setup will do that for me though.
EDIT: these are the two 10" subs ive ordered http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/vibe-slick-p-5949.html

They are 10 inch, the 12s were too deep.
To Doddy, the sound from them is amazing, great bass and with the infinities on the door for middle and treble the sound is nice and balanced.
The bass speakers don't rattle at all, it was the door speakers that rattled the speaker fronts until I got out the little sticky pads.
If you are building the box to house the speakers, remember to port the box in the direction of the passenger compartment, to let the air out and through to the front for deeper bass.

put summit that looks good on the 'boot' shelf
            my old roadster -

I remember when I first set out with my install and I was going to do subs on the shelf. Team Turners (one of the best car audio specialists in the country) told me not too. I did anyway then later they 'made some changes' for me and produced the above. Same system but 1,000 times better........

wouldn't a flat active sub behind the seats do enough of a job in such a small cabin?

You've got to push the envelope, smart-Eddy, push the envelope.

I can't see how speakers in the boot on a notchback would sound good, surely there's a space issue?

                    Is it really that effective?

Re: 2x10" Subs in a Roady Cab?

Is that box in the picture ported? It just looks quite small to be anything other than a fully sealed enclosure, although the picture may just be deceiving.

Smart-Eddy, Slim active subs are quite a big compromise over a proper, dedicated sub. The problem is they can't move as much air to produce sub-bass at anywhere similar volume as regular sub so invariably they just give that little bit extra that a mid-bass can't give you and they can sometimes be drowned out by something as simple as road noise. I'm not saying they're bad but if you're willing to go a regular sub/amp (or even one of the full size active subs) route you'll see a massive difference.

Daisy, yeah it would be very effective. Manufacturers design and recommend specific volumes for the box/enclosure which house's the subs so as long as the enclosure is around that size then they should sound great. If they're setup correctly too it you shouldn't even have the problem of them overpowering the speakers in the front so you can get a very very nice balanced sound.

This is a very interesting option. 12" slimline and you can even buy an enclosure designed specifically for it by Pioneer.

:agree: Sub-bass is all about moving air, and with the box being ported towards the passenger side, the air gets pushed out and into passenger compartment, so you get a great bass sound.
Having said that, the only drawback is when you fold the roof into the boot, it obstructs the airflow, so the bass is'nt quite as punchy with the roof down, but it just proves how good it is when the roof is on, you can here the bass getting stronger as you close the roof.

To get the sound right though you need to make sure the volume of the box, the port's diameter and length are all to the correct specs. You're far better having the correct sized sealed enclosure than a ported one the wrong size.

Back to the OP, I wouldn't bother with the powercap in your install and what amp are you using with the subs?

Sealed enclosures are a bit more flexible on sizing as well, you can have a much smaller sealed enclosure for a sub than you can a ported one.

Im using a sony 1000P5 Class-D amp 1600 Watts peak and 1000 RMS and then a phoniex gold not sure on the model number but its 4x50 Watts RMS for the front doors and the 6x9s behind the seats.
