  • 450 CDi Gearbox oil!

    Hi,
Have decided to change the gearbox oil on my 450 Cdi. The car has done 223000km and i have no idea when it was last done, if ever!?

Is it part of any service?

So, can anyone point me to a link with some oil i can order? Whats the best stuff?

Also, is it worth putting in some "Slick 50" manual gearbox treatment? I know the smart is a semi auto, but from what i understand the gearbox inside is pretty much the same as a manual?!

Don't use any additives. Plain automatic transmission oil is more than adequate. Comma AQM is what I use and have used for a decade in several Smarts. Transmission oil for the Smart should meet MB specification 235.71. Only two transmission oils are currently listed as being approved.
Mobil ATF D 21065 data sheet:

This is a GM DEXRON II D type transmission oil hence Comma AQM is fully compatible.

The 450 gearbox uses ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) even though it
is not an automatic. The oilchange is not part of any service, as it is supposed
to be filled for life. It does not hurt to change as it gets pretty dark over time.

Cheers for all your replies & links!

Another question, if your driveshaft oil seals are leaking, I'm assuming its oil from the gearbox that leaks out?

The oil level does not reach the seals and a bit of oil sweat is good since it wets the seal and protects mating surface on drive shaft.

Possibly a bit late, but, this is what I filled mine with:

                    Millers Oils Millermatic UN ATF
                    •MB 236.2 (except for GL76, 30-5 & GL275E gearboxes)
                    •MB 236.4, MB 236.6, MB 236.7
£13.00 odd for two, 1L bottles, perfect size for getting in there.

This is not necessary true, so you got to be careful.
The reason is that the WIS had incorrect information for many years,
stating that the gearbox should have ordinary gearoil.
This has later been corrected, specifying ATF for all smarts with MB engines,
                      and gearoil for the 451.
