Should I disconnect the battery both leads [ or just the negative lead ] before I remove the transmission control unit on my Fortwo mhd 2009 1 litre. thanks for your time.

The safe way to disconnect battery on a negative goround vehicle is always disconnecting negative terminal first.
The reason is, if you first disconnect positive terminal there is always a risk of your spanner touching chassis whilst loosening positive terminal.
By first disconnecting the negative it does not matter if you then accidentally touch chassis with your tool.
