had this sent to me , so cant say how true it is :-

Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.
This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales person to call back and get someone at home.
What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialled the call, and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer!!!

or just don't pick up unknown numbers.......

caller id is worth the £1 a month we then have different ring tones for those numbers in our land line address book.

All you have to do is search on Snopes.com and it will tell you if it is real or not.
Then you don't spread incorrect info.

Will tips recommended by Andy Rooney reduce telemarketing phone calls and junk mail?

        Re: Might be of interest

When I am bored and play my favoirite annoying game with the cold callers.

Answer the phone, but never say anythign into it, not even hello. See how long they hold the line open before it goes dead or you get bored.
My record is about 5 minutes of dead air

The best waste of there money was a few years ago when I answered and before I could say anything (which I wasn't going to anyway), the person started their sales pitch (lots of noise, like an extrememly busy call center). I just switched the phone to speaker mode and mute, and let him talk. After a few minutes they asked a question and got no response. They asked a couple more times and still getting no response they finally hung up.
        GREAT FUN

My wife was very impressed to learn yesterday that Microsoft was aware of a high risk problem on our computer and wanted to help ... Luckily she couldn't understand much of what he was saying so put the phone down.

                  Re: Might be of interest

About 15 years ago, when we moved into our house, I was given a phone number to call, from someone at work, which blocks cold callers.
All I did was call this number, give my name & address. I then got a letter of conformation through the post.
We very very rarely get any cold callers, wereas my work mates are always moaning about them.
Don't know how it works or who it was.

^^^ the TPS - Telephone preference service.
                    We're on that too.

In retrospect, I suppose "supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" wasn't a great "safe word..."

It doesn't stop BT, foreign companies, dodgy companies trying to get your PPI back nor scammers telling you that your computer has a virus.
And these are the people who are the problems.

i had a PPI company call me saying that i might have an outstanding PPI claim... i told them i dont own a house, the guy procedes by saying its not just morgages it could be car finamce or credit cards... i procedes by saying i dont have any credit cards and my car isnt on finance, he sounded upset and put the phone down.
another one is as you are talking to 'john' from india, say mid way through you are hacing difficulty hearing then and suddenly start saying hello in varied tones and then hang up
one lady phoned and asked for mr lall... now when you have 2 mr lall's in the house you ask which one, mr lall senior or mr lall junior. the lady askded for my dad, he wasnt home and she said VERY rudely why did i pick up the phone, i replied cos im there son and put the phone down!
