my smart 451 has had trouble lately going into reverse gear .[ 80,000 miles ]
my independent smart repairer says its a common fault on the 451 [ actuator ] he has replaced them on 6 cars lately
some even on low milage cars .
for peace of mind i got him to replace the clutch at same time .

Your smart specialist doesn't know as much as you think. Not going into reverse is a common problem on the 451 but you don't need to change the actuator, just grease up the actuator and upgrade the software. The only time you need to change the actuator is if the worm drive snaps. If it does that, you won't be able to select any gears at all.
