  • Smart fortwo Radio Problems

Hi All, As this is my first post I will try to keep it short.
My problem is that a few months ago my factory provided
Grundig Radio Cassette started behaving very srtangely,
it would not turn on when the on button was pressed and
would instead come on suddenly either while I was driving
or sometime when there was no one in the car.
It now will not turn on at all although the light comes on
when the car is started. Also I can hear one radio station
coming through the speakers very faintly on some occassions.
I contacted Smart Repair, but they say they do not repair radio's
and that a new one would cost me about £240.00 which I would
rather not pay. so my questions are firstly has anyone else had
this problem and if so how did they resolve it? secondly does
anyone know where I can get the radio fixed if the problem is
not terminal? and finally is there any way to replace the factory
fitted Radio with a normal Radio? Thanking you all in advance for your help.

I believe it is relativly easy to fit a new radio, my four two has a different head unit. If i was you i would replace the smart one with a different head unit, you will pay less than £240.

Maybe your radio has been given A.I. to let you hear good songs?

Overall its not good for the radio todo this, I would first consider smart centre to replace if under warranty.

If this is not an option, go to a local 'In car Hi Fi' centre, loads around. Tell them to replace within you budget. They should fit it there and then.

£120 would get you a VERY good CD/Radio player from Panasonic or Alpine.

      I wish you luck.

Thanks for the advice. Is it relatively straight forward to fit a new radio or do I have to change the wiring in the smart or can I buy adaptors?

                Welcome Ninate to the site.

Sounds like your cassette/radio unit is kaput. Easily replaced with a pair of removal tools (around £3 on Ebay).

Do not buy a new unit as you can get a good secondhand Cassette/radio unit on Ebay usually between £30 to £60 depending on condition, as most people now want CD/radio units.

They come up all the time. Watch out for the colour though, as some are blue and others siver.
