    Let your Turbo spin down.

As far as I was aware the need to let your engine idle was not particularly due to heat but because the turbo spins at many 10,000's of RPM & takes quite a while to spin down & stop. If you switch off your engine as soon as you stop then the oil pump if off, oil is not pumped, oil is not fed to the turbo & so the bearings are starved of oil - ouch premature turbo failure!

what is the significance to the engine longevity if you fail to run the car in properly over the first 1500km?
Would depend on how you abuse it I guess.

If you really thrashed it that first 1000 miles & didn't allow the turbo to settle after long high-speed bashes you'd probably get different problems longer-term to those if you had run it at a very steady constant 40mph instead.

It depends on how much you wind the rubber band up!!!!

I've heard that the turbo going is quite common. Thats why I always let him cool down for a few mins, is unbelievable how hot the turbo gets......

Well 94,500 kms so far almost 60,000 miles with nothing except 1 new set of tyres 1 exhaust & a lambda sensor (oh and a few bulbs!)
Service it, feed it petrol when it asks & clean it sometimes!

              So let me get this.
Treat it good for the first 1000 miles, Take it steady for the last part of a run or keep it idleing for 60 seconds befor you switch off, Check the oil and keep it toped up with a good quality item weekley, Only put high quality fuel it the baby.
Is that everything I need to know for problem free Smarting ?
Or is there somthing else I need to know befor I take delivery of katie

No need to idle for 60 seconds in normal town situation driving. Only if you have been driving hard or using a lot or rev contiously or if you just come off the motorway.

Tyre pressure!!!Need to check as not enough will increase rolling resistance and put MPG up,also driving with the windows down will increase fuel consumption more than you think!

My first 2CV did 105,000+ miles; if a Smart doesn't do that it will be very disappointing.
