  • I regret getting rid of my 450 CDI

    Hello all,

I'm a returning forum member. I used to post here very regularly when I owned a 2001 Fortwo CDI Pulse. I did an article for Evilution on the intercooler mounting fault:

    http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php?id=656

I sold the car in 2010 to get something bigger as I thought family life was soon upon me. It still is soon upon me, but we now have another car in the household and I thoroughly regret getting rid of my CDI! I've got a big old BMW v8 in the garage as a toy and a rather battered Mitsubishi Carisma ( I know...I know) as a daily runabout.

As the Carisma is coming up to MOT and insurance date, I find myself looking around at 451 CDIs and read consistently of power loss issues and returns to MB/Smart from disappointted owners and think to myself, I don't recall any of these problems with the 450 CDI, which was great apart from the regular smart things.

My old car is now leading a new life somewhere near Gateshead - I even emailed the new owner to see if he would be interested in selling it back to me...no answer!

So my request to the community is this, if you have a 2001 onwards CDI that you would like to sell, please get in touch. I don't mind a project and would prefer a car without a bright blue interior. I'm keeping my eyes on ebay and autotrader but not much sensibly priced cars around at the moment.

    Fingers crossed I find one!

A 2002 or later Cdi is worth holding on to. NIL road tax, exceptional fuel mileage and the most reliable engine.

The 45kw diesel 451 doesn't have all the silly issues inherent in the 54kw diesel.

Hi Evilution; that's interesting. I had read that the 54kw cars suffered much more regularly from loss of power issues, related to wiring loom issues - although on occasion 45hp owners were chipping in on the longer threads complaining of similar problems. How do you tell if a car is the 45kw or 54kw version?

I went to take a look at an '09 plate car on a forecourt near Manchster at £3495. Unfortunately it had some light damage to the rear panel - suspect it had been reversed in to a bollard (crash bar etc looked ok so just plastic panel damage). More importantly, the car threw an engine management light and shuddered quite badly on first being turned over. Might go back and see how interested the dealer is in doing a deal on the car for a good price if I can take a code reader with me.

This is the car in question: click here

          45kw and 54kw are 61HP and 73HP.

Sorry, I've confused kw and hp. In fact the ad for this car states its a 45hp car so I'm guessing its age related as to which hp the car has.
