  • Problem with Smart of Hertford... what do I do next?

I recently spent over £4000 at Smart of Hertford on my service, amazingly, nothing on the engine (aside the Turbo). However, soon after carrying out the work I began experiencing numerous problems, including the lacquer peeling off my newly reconditioned alloys (3 days later), the turbo that was replaced was investigated and found to not require replacement and they had replaced the clutch actuator and oil pan at a cost of nearly £1000 as they had removed the head of stuck bolts and drilled them out (breaking the actuator in the process). Now to be fair, I probably would have accepted an apology and a discount on the work I was having done there next week, but went I went in to say that after replacing my steering wheel and brake light sensor for a traction control light coming on, that it was still happening (after £1000 on it), could they investigate it. They told me they wouldn't do anything for over a week (which as my car kept loosing power I didn't consider acceptable). After writing them a complaint letter they offered to look into it a couple of weeks later, but when I wrote back to say that I needed a car before then and that I wanted to discuss the matter before then (as I wanted a gaurantee they wouldn't break other components as I couldn't afford another £1000 in components they have damaged) I received no reply. Since then I have written four emails/letters and have received no reply back, though I did have a phone call on Tuesday to say someone would ring me the next day (which they didn't) and another one today asking if I was still bringing my car in for its Air Con on Monday! However, each time I email or phone their service department about the complaint, nobody will talk to me, reply or call me back!

I feel absolutely disgusted than I spend £4000 on work that was estimated at less than £1000, because they said I needed to replace a Turbo that could easily have been repaired, a steering wheel and light sensor that didn't make any difference and then they broke my clutch actuator whilst removing bolts to adjust it and the oil pan's bolts whilst replacing that. In addition to that, despite paying for the service and to have my wheels refurbished, they still added on an £18 charge to remove two wheels to change the brake pads... surely they were removing the wheels anyway when doing a service or to put them in acid for the refurb?

What do I do next... if they refuse to discuss the matter with me, am I better off taking it to Motorcodes? Is there anyone else I can talk to? Please help

1st step is to contact smart customer services direct via phone and email then I would insist on another dealer to take over as you are not happy with there work, then contact trading standards and then local press/watchdog/auto express etc

Hope you get it sorted soon

I have booked in for the rest of the work (air con, some trim and cruise control) to be done at S2Smarts and from what I've heard, I will only be using them from now on!

The bit that gets me is that I would have settled for an apology and a small goodwill gesture... in return I would have kept using them and I am even looking to get a new Smart for my other half which I would have bought there... so I can't understand how they keep customers at Hertford with service like that!

Get a solicitor, and don't screw around, he may advise you to get an independent assessment of the work carried out.

              Not forum opinion.

You may need to do this before any other work is carried out on your car to avoid giving them a get out.

Let smart HQ know you are getting a solicitor.

So I should still call Smart HQ even though I'm out of warranty?

Also I was reading up on Motorfacts as an alternative to Courts and that seemed appealing (as Smart of Hertford are part of that scheme). Any thoughts or experiences on using that?

Re: Problem with Smart of Hertford... what do I do next?

Smart of Hertford won't have refurb'd your wheels - they will have outsourced to a specialist.

Which finish has been applied? Paint, powdercoat or diamond cut/polished?

If you have a diamond cut finish these specialists rarely offer a guarantee because they will peel & blister very quickly - the finish does not last.

It was powder coated and it was done by Supreme Wheels. 3 days is exceptionally poor for the lacquer to peel when they charge £100 per wheel!

Agreed. That is a) extortionate, and b) not acceptable.

Yes you should ring up smart out of warranty or not it's your money that their name is pouring down the drain.

God this reminded me of where the Smart experience goes really wrong. I sympathise with you.

Just keep out of the mercedes garage if you can, as they treat Smart owners (Fortwo and Roadster) like mud.
