Hi I'm new here and would really like some help. I've just got my smart for two back from garage after having a short circuit which resulted in my torque converter starter motor and alternator having to be replaced. At quite a cost. But I've now got a whooshing sound when I accelerate the garage says this is nothing down to what they done. What could be causing this as the performance is ok but the whooshing sound is loud just when accelerating. Pls help.

Re: Help
It's always worrying when someone says 'the garage'. Smarts shouldn't go near local garages for anything but generic work like brakes.
However, we can't help if you don't give us any information about the car. What age/engine variant are we talking about? (i.e 2009 71bhp MHD Passion/2004 700cc Pulse etc)

Re: Help
It's a 2005 fortwo pure 61 semi automatic coupe / petrol. 698 cc / The work was carried out at halfordsi auto centre. The report I received back from halfords was the clutch actuator seized causing the starter motor and alternator to short which also cause the battery to fail. So they have replaced the clutch kit and actuator alternator and stater motor and battery. Sorry about info earlier just so upset that after all this work I've now got a whooshing sound which they say is nothing to do with the work they have carried out. The cost of the work has cost 1200. Luckily I had aa breakdown plus which covered 500 so I was left to find the rest.Last edited by Lorna108; 29-11-13, 08:01 PM.

Re: Help
I hate to say it, but you've probably thrown good money away. Never take a smart (especially not for something clutch related), to a non specialist.
Where are you based? It's probably worth getting the opinion of someone who knows smarts.

Re: Help
I'm based at gatwick The aa warranty sent a guy down to check the amount of work was needed and they agreed it was necessary. But I was not able to put it in smart garage as the warranty peeps would not pay their hourly rate for labour. The original problem was the car had no power even aa could not get it started. So as it was a new battery they towed me to halfords.

Re: Help
As has been already stated, visiting a knowledgeable indy in the first instance may have saved you quite a bit of money - but that's done now.
The whooshing noise could be something as simple as a small pipe that sees turbo boost having become detached and leaking.
Get the car to a decent indy and they will sort you out. They may even (especially if you have the old components that were replaced) be able to advise if anything was changed unnecessarily - in which case some cash back from Halfords might be on.
Did the car sit unused for any length of time before the non-starting issue?

Re: Help
You don't need to go so far as Ian at BigP for help - you have Smart Car Specialists in Guildford significantly nearer.
And have to agree with the other opinions, you're wasting your money and risking further issues taking your car to a non-specialist.
