  • insurance question...

why when i buy ebc discs vented and cross drilled.
    and they get fitted.
no one says i need to inform insurance..

is this cause i dont have to as they dont care as long as the car stops or does everyone asume you know thats what you need to do.

as its not a performance making it go faster issue i wounder if swift would care?

Best idea is to phone them and ask them a theoretical question.

As far as I'm aware, brake pads and discs are consumable products, i.e. service items. You can change them to whatever you like as long as they're OEM or better and conform to the UK safety standards. If you upgraded to braided hoses, better calipers, etc, then you'd have to declare it. It's like air filters, you can change the air filter to a K&N panel filter and not have to tell insurance, but if you modify or remove the airbox, you do.

yea i heard that but before they get there hands on it i would like to know for shore that they wont use it as an excuse not to do it.
as i say i just swapped out the discs and pads to EBC Green pads and the vented and cross drilled disks.

i have also heard that if you change the breaks to these type its a known upgrade to the norm so has to be informed of. the pads seems ok as they are uk spec and may not be able to use the oem ones when they are needed. i would have thought they would have done the same with the discs just a little nerviouse about it. was gunna get some new disks then swap um run them hard to get the warn look then hand it over. just dont know if i can just through it at them and they dont care providing its not glaring boy racer upgrade.

Simple rule with insurance companies. Tell them everything, however minor and let them decide if it's relevant or not. If you 2nd guess them you could come a cropper.

              Re: insurance question...

Easiest thing would be to just phone them up, and ask them this:

"Hello Mr Insurance Company, I'm thinking of adding -insert whatever modification you do- can you tell me how much that'll add to my premium? Thanks."

Then if they say it won't add anything, smile. If it needs to be declared tell them thank you and then phone them back in a couple of hours to tell them you did it. Please be aware though, at the moment if you haven't declared anything you must declare, you may not actually be insured.

It seems they are ok with it as its not oversized just a disc swap....
3 insurance companies prevoiuse have said the same before so i just stopped saying but years back eagle star although i told them things on my policy wernt right 7 times i just gave up.. then came unstuck when they would not pay out cause the details was wrong.. i had no proof as i was calling them to tell um the same thing.

I just wish they was all the same with these rules... drives me mad

I would add that if you have changes to your policy over modifications or additions to your car, and agree on the phone with your insurance company that there is an additional cost, or nothing at all.

Just make sure you either get an email (print it out) or a letter confirming the changes, costs, etc.

                    Re: insurance question...

When I've spoken to my insurance, it seems they basically expect the car to be totally standard as manufactured.........best to declare/ask as they will look for any excuse to baulk a claim.
