  • Engine rebuild

    Hi all,
Just bought our first smart car which needs engine rebuild should have read write ups first as I thought the misfiring was down to plugs or leads at worst. But after reading forums and reviews realise that's not the case.

Back to my question has anybody used smart motorsport of Kimpton Hertfordshire for a rebuild and are they any good.

Or perhaps recommend a good rebuilder in essex?

    Many thanks in advance

      Re: Engine rebuild

Had my engine rebuilt by fudgesmart. No complaints. Would certainly use them again.

Used Smart Motorsport in Kimpton last year when i needed my abs light reseting. Quite a small outfit, but friendly enough and reasonably priced. Cost me less to get the light reset than other places i enquired with.
Was doing a couple of rebuilds at the time and seemed to be doing everything the same way that i had seen at fudgesmart. So again, no complaints, but not seem their end product.

        Thanks for replies

Having spent good money buying the car obviously don't want to over spend on rebuild.
I don't want to sell on in this condition unlike my seller.
I know Fudgesmart are highly recommended!!
But the difference in price of £150 is significant and if I can any feedback about Smart Motorsport that would be appreciated.

        Again thanks for replies

          Re: Engine rebuild

Some of the other smart specialists raise eyebrows about how Fudgesmart can do a rebuild so cheap. It is because they do so many of them so they're ultra-efficient at them - and probably get very good discounts on the rebuild kits & parts due to the volumes they purchase them in.

I would be VERY wary of anyone offering rebuilds cheaper than Fudge - you have to ask... what are they NOT doing?

Have you reached your (needs a rebuild) conclusion merely from reading the forums or are all the symptoms present? Could it still be something as simple as plug leads or coils? - they do fail on smarts.

Who you should go back to and get some cash back (if it does actually need a rebuild).

The price is forgotten long after the quality is remembered.
            Something to ponder.....

              Re: Engine rebuild

I've checked all plugs centre cylinder plugs oiled but sparking ok.
Bottom plugs on 1&3 slightly oiled but all appear to be sparking sufficiently.
Main symptom really rough idle misfiring and poor acceleration at low revs when pulling away.
Loss of power when on an incline.

                pay cheap, pay twice

and why do that as it will only end up wasting your time in the future. lots of people have had the builds by fudge and are that happy they recommend all the time as they take care of the cars and indeed know them inside and out

It's probably best to perform a compression test to know for certain.
Some of your symptoms could be due other issues (it only needs one of the six plug leads to malfunction for the idle to go to hell, and various other (cheap) components can affect boost and hence power loss).
Compression test will confirm the problems are due to cylinder leakage or point to external items.

If it does need rebuilding, definitely go to a reputable rebuilder (Fudge's rep is second to none) and even more definitely get the seller to pay for at least some of it. They knew what they were doing when they sold you it. Don't let the ******* get away with it.

                    Re: Engine rebuild

Get it to fudge - ask them to give it the once over.
The one thing you can be guaranteed of - they don't do anything that's not needed.
