  • Help needed - engine management light

    Hi All,

I'm new here but have been a long time viewer!

I am wondering if someone can help me. Our smart cars battery died today and we jumped started it but the engine management light has now come on! It was completely dead and I know this can happen on other brands

We know there are no problems as it wasn't on yesterday and we haven't moved it off the drive.

Is there a way of turning it off without having to pay the standard £100-150 labour charge?

Obviously I have thought about a hammer but my partner wasn't too keen!

    Thanks in advance

    Ryan

Re: Help needed - engine management light

      Hi Mac

Thank you for the offer but it appears there is an underlying problem after all!

The car has an error code of p0412 - do you know what causes this and is it easy to fix?

I have tried every garage over the last couple of days and no one is open. We are hoping to p/x it on Wednesday so are getting desperate for a fix!

      Any help would be great

      Thanks
      Ryan

Re: Help needed - engine management light

        Searching with Google:

Generic OBD Error Code Details for P0412
Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve "A" Circuit

        What does this mean?
        OBD Code P0412refers to
The optical sensor provides a high resolution signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by counting pulses on the sensor disk located in the injection pump. The high resolution is one of the most important inputs by the PCM for fuel control and timing. This test monitors the number of high resolution pulses which have been missed (not detected). It's based on a comparison between the number of pulses that were detected since the last pump cam pulse and the number of the pulses that should have occurred. There are approximately 64 high resolution pulses for every cam pulse.

        Symptoms
Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0412
        - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

        Causes
Possible causes of OBD code P0412
        - Open or short in the optical sensor circuit - Optical sensor connector - Damaged optical sensor - Damaged PCM or ECM The Error code is generally activated on detection of the following conditions: Some high resolution pulses are missing from the optical sensor to the PCM

        Possible Solutions
        - If damage, repair optical sensor circuit - Replaced optical sensor - Replaced PCM or ECM

          Thanks

I did see this but wondered if anyone else had this issue with their smart car and if thy knew how to fix it?

I will call smart tomorrow to see if they know but as we are trading it in are conscious of costs

Any other help would be great

Re: Help needed - engine management light

You need to have smart qualify that code for you.
I guess that the explanation above is of generic nature,
and that does not necessarily mean the same on a smart.

              Thanks BBE

The code is a valid smart code (checked evolution) - will a official smart odb reader give me more details?
