Smart 4 2 coupe passion 71 suspension coil springs

Near side coil spring suddenly went, ? Is this a manufacturing design fault ? Mileage only in 12000's. Not a happy smart user, any advice huge bill to pay.

This was a common feature of the 450 model & was a free fix by the dealers if you were lucky.
As I'm guessing yours is a 451 model, it might not be the case.
Try contacting your local dealer & asking the question.

Thank you for your advice, dealer has fitted new one for free, had both front springs replaced, have both old ones, looks like other one was unknown to me also broken, car, purchased as guaranteed used and 2 months out of guarantee. Getting 2nd opinion on whether should have been noticed at end of guarantee check. Any comments welcome.

No way of knowing when the other spring actually broke, ie after check.
Be grateful for them replacing them FOC outwith the guarantee period and leave it be. That's my comment.

Thank you, exactly my thoughts. Never expected this type of fault to happen in first place on such a young car.

Front spring breakages were rife on earlier (450) model and could be dealer fixed FOC under Eskulab arrangement. Probably the reason you got yours done as goodwill. MB/smart had enough bad press on the first model without wanting to court more I'd imagine.
