Back in 2009, Elmer, my old Smart, DG57 FYD, died in action and was written off by a Mercedes ML. In the office we've just passed some time with finding our old cars on the DVLA registration search, and Elmer has tax and MOT until October 2015 - https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk . So what's going on there, is Elmer back from the dead somewhere out there?

Indeed - written off just basically means uneconomical to repair, normally based either the low value of the vehicle, or on manufacturers prices for replacement parts, coupled with typical bodyshop repair times. The lesser damaged cat 'C' or 'D' can be worthwile to put back on the road, if purchased at the right price and you have the contacts or the skills and time to repair it yourself.
One of the downsides is that the car will always be worth less and some people are put off by insurance write-offs.Comment

Back again. Elmer is still taxed and tested out there somewhere, but now I'm asking about my second Smart, Woodstock - KP08 UJU. According to the car check, it doesn't exist and there's no history of it! Now, a few months after I sold it, I had a letter about the car, asking for the mileage on the car and the date I sold it. Thought it was a bit odd, but maybe someone was doing a HPI check or something. I thought nothing more of it. From me, it went as part ex for the new car in early 2015.
So does anyone have info on woodstock since 2015?
