Please please please help all you Smart people out there! I drove a long way to see a 84bhp that's for sale, everything appeared to be perfect until I took a look underneath the car. I saw what I saw shown in the picture and the guy had no knowledge about it. Apparently, the car had a service only last month and what could it be? He said he's going to sort it out before we proceed any further. Should I stay away? Your invaluable comments and advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers a lot!

Given where it is, it is really hard to say with any certainty as to what it may be. It doesn't look fresh though. If it is oily to the touch, it might be runoff if the person doing the service spilt some oil past the oil cap but I can't be sure. As far as I know, the 84bhp doesn't suffer with oil leaks particularly. -
Oil comes from turbo or engine breather.Comment

Thank you guys! I have heard that the car's sump has been re-sealed by the mechanic. Is this all there is to it? I hope yes! If the oil had come from the sump, how come it wasn't sealed properly in the first place? Thank you all in advance!Comment

I guess it could be that but then I'd ask the same question you are asking - why was the sump gasket replaced? I guess the bigger thing is, is there any fresh oil coming out of it now? If it is, then there is still a leak somewhere.
Where is being advertised?

There is - however slight - the possibility that the leak is from the rear crankshaft seal. That, would be costly to fix.Comment

I wanted the car to be inspected properly by a specialist garage but unfortunately the seller had declined my request so I gave the car a miss!!
The seller has re-advertised the Smart on eBay & Gumtree...
...and now I am looking for a Brabus..........

Good move on your part. You shouldn't have to spend early ownership tracing and rectifying a leak (which an MOT tester will at least comment on).Originally posted by Wesley Smart View Post
If it is the rear crank seal leaking it is only a matter of time before the clutch becomes contaminated and begins slipping (if it isn't already) and creates another expensive problem.

I don't know what your budget will stretch to but there are 2 in the local area, one in Warrington itself....and now I am looking for a Brabus..........

Forget about the Brabus for the time being. Is The gb-10 just like a MHD with faulty design with the belt?? Thanks a million!!Comment

The GB-10 is a trim level which is not specific to an engine. The engines only changed the once around the end of 2008 for the MHD (from a petrol point of view). In short, the way to tell if a car is a MHD is if the switch by the gearstick is present (to turn the stop/start off) and the car has the "Eco" lights in the instrument cluster, though I am not sure if they are also present on the turbo 451s and the diesel varieties as well and are just never used along with the badge on the boot.Last edited by Ocracoke; 15-04-17, 10:15 PM.Comment
