  • Not A Smart Owner Yet

    Hi,

im not the owner of a smart just yet, still looking for the right one, and even then i have to wait for an insurance claim to be settled. so before i become an owner, i briefly introduce myself and why i have decided i want a roadster.

firstly my name is james but i have long have the nickname ghosty, to to when i was younger i was thin and well very pasty, i can nort say im abit more healthy, and abit more tanned. anyhow im 34, and currently driving a peugeot 206 HDi GTi (yes im sure you all have comments about the DV6), anyway i bought this car as i needed a cheap econimical diesel for work (delivery driver at domino's), anyway as i soon found out to my cost, this car was not the most suited what with its DPF (for those that dont know, is basically a big crosslatice ceramic bloackage in the exhaust system). anyway this was removed (not required by law or vosa) at a cost of £400, at the same time i opted for the stage 1 remap which put the car from 110bhp to 140bhp, gave it a torque increase of around 70nm (235lbs/ft after mapping), econemy was also improved, was getting around 34mpg now seeing 42.8mpg not bad considering i have a somewhat lead foot at times.

so i thought i now had a realiable car, not so the DPF was hiding the turbo failure issue, so when that went, there was anoher £600 down the pan (fortunatly a friend of mine is a machanic, so i sourced the turbo, he did all the work for £200). so now im £1000 lighter not including general wear and tear parts (brakes, tyres, bearings etc etc) so in all this car has cost me around £4000 to buy and sort out. the thing is im now constently woried the turbo is gonna blow again as once these cars start destroying em, they dont stop (a fellow HDi GTi owner went through 3 in the space of about 3000 miles.

so onto why i want a roadster, well every since i got rid of my 306 cabriolet (sold that to help fund the 206), i have been missing something, i always liked the crx del-sol (targa top, nice engine) but there just to rare to find a good spec'd one, plus the fuel econemy in the lowest engined model is ****.

so whats like a del-sol, hmmmm some time later, i was thinking about the smart roadster, so i did a little looking and found it to be a mix of everything i want, small, econimical, qwerky (look at the front end), has the potential for good modification (lambo doors are a definite).

so now i know what i want next step is to find one, im looking for a brabus, exclusive if i can find one under £5000, as that will be my eventual budget, i want a fully loaded one, so all the toys.

i have read all the pitfalls (leaks etc) about the roadster, im somwhat of a fabricator (i actually used to make and sell parts for the 306 cabrio) so i hope i can continue this with a roadster.

anyway thanks for the time and hopefully ill be driving a roadster soon

Make sure you know what to look for (not just the leaks). Fuel economy is good but it's easy to buy a money pit. Read this carefully before you go shopping so you're fully armed with what to look for:
