  • Hello com Cumbria

    Hi all,
I am new to this forum and to smart cars too.
A couple of days ago a bought a 2004 yellow roadster from Morpeth.

I did buy it as a toy to not only drive but to play about with and it seems there are lots of shiny bits to buy.

I was told buy the woman I bought it from that she had it from new and that it had be maintained to the highest standard, however first thing I notice is the top breather hose has perished through and looks like it has been like this for a while. Bit of fuel pipe fixed that while a new one on order. Also have a HT lead puller on order. I think I will keep my eyes open for more perished hoses etc if the garage that serviced it didn't spot the glaringly obvious then what else have they missed.

Anyway it has over 131000 miles on it and apparently has never had any engine work done to it, except the sump has been changed out for one with a drain hole. I think that if I run it until after Christmas I will get the engine rebuilt. There is a garage in Ulverston that deals with smart cars, does anybody know about them or had dealing? Cheers

The engine sounds good for the miles and it has all the toys inside trip computer, flappy paddle gearbox, cruise control, leather heated seats, hard top for winter. I think I got a good deal.

I am thinking polybush and new suspension after the engine, maybe silicon hoses in black as a preventative measure.

I am hoping to get away next week down south towards Plymouth. I am hoping I get better mpg than my mercedes ML55(although I expect that wont be hard).

    Cheers guys

Welcome to the Roadster fold .

If the garage is Glyn's place, his reputation is superb and people go distances to see him.

Glynn is in Ulveston and has a fantastic reputation.

Why are you going to rebuild the engine? If its running well and not consuming oil then there is no need to do this. I heard today of a roadster that has reached 230,000 miles and is just having its first rebuild.

I was more concerned with the cam chain. The engine is a bit rattley when cold but sounds ok when warm.
I don't believe there is much point in waiting for it to fail before getting it rebuilt however I will keep my eye on it and listen for any changes. I also don't think that it has been kept in the top mechanical condition I was lead to believe. Yesterday I changed the very black oil for new synthetic and found things held on with wire and tyraps. I filled up the washer bottle only to find water came out the bottom as fast as I could pour it in. The air filter I took off was jet black. The interior is nice and the body work is good. I would like to have it tuned up a bit but not with this many miles on the engine.

Glynn does cam chain replacement for about £350iirc. It is done with the engine in place & does not require a rebuild.

A chap on theroadster.net had his remapped at 140,000 miles and he ran it to 197,000 when he sold it because it needed a new turbo. That was original engine build, original clutch & original turbo.

I've read all these horror stories that these engines have a life span of between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on how well maintained. Great to hear about high milers, puts my mind a bit more at ease

Well, erm, yes, those high milers are all Roadsters - which have a different engine to the fortwo, so I don't like to burst your bubble but those stories are of no comfort to you. There are plenty of very well maintained fortwo engines that have needed rebuild at as low as 50,000 miles.

There are also a number that have got to 100,000miles+ without needing a rebuild, but I'm afraid to say they tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

The fortwo engine is much more fragile than the Roadster one with the exception of the fortwo Brabus which actually has the Roadster engine installed.
