double DIN install advice pls!!

hi there! now for the next upgrade.... i would like to replace my standard head unit with a pioneer or alpine double din unit? has anyone done such a mod yet? is it possible.... or would it bebest to stick to a folding out screen.... these tend to be a bit more expensive to buy though?
any advice would be appreciated!

fold out screens have a tenancy to hit either the indicator stalk or the heater, double din is easy enough just use 2 facias
