  • Pioneer AVIC-F310BT

    Hi,

My 2008 451 cabrio MHD has the usual Smart radio with sound upgrade pack. After a visit to my local Merc dealer I'm kinda smitten with the Pioneer AVIC-F310BT which is fitted on the 2010 spec Passion models. I've had a look around on the web and can see this unit is available for around £500. Does anyone know if this is a simple swap into my Smart, or is it going to require plug changes and hassle? I would be very grateful for any advice.

    Cheers

    Darren

"apparently" the dealers wont retro fit it, so not sure if thats an indication that its hard.

probably cos a retro fit wouldn't be competitive... and dealers aren't exactly known for thier intelligence are they anyway?

There aren't any problems I can see , it's a std double DIN and there's no other tie in to the car is there ?
Just fit it like any other double DIN?

Any 451 owners out there that have changed the std headunit to anything?

can you imagine a merc engineer fitting an aftermarket headunit??? i know they are normal people who if on their own car would do it, but half the time they are baffled by most common sense car issues, unless they are actually interested in cars. They won't retro fit because they haven't been trained, so they won't touch it, best is either DIY which is easy as always or pay the person you bought it off to do it.

IMHO, id do it myself, set yourself a few hours on a weekend during the weekend

I change my standard unit for an Alpine unit, no issues with fitting, I can assume the Pioneer is just as easy. just needs a Double Din surround.

Go to a smart dealership and see if you can work out where the GPS antenna and mic is located in a factory car.

Speaking of replacement units, I have been looking for a replacement for my 2008 brabus fortwo and would like to install a unit with the ability to interact with the ipod where the control of the track selection is done via the head unit, not the ipod

Anyone have any suggestions that won't break the bank??

            Thanks

I wouldn't bother. Its rubbish. The navigation is so slow half the time you've passed the junction before it realises you should be turning etc. Stick with a tomtom. The user interface is confusing and restrictive. If you want to navigate to the high street it insists on a house number. If you don't know a house number you cannot continue.

I agree , I tried it on the passion I had the other day, got one address in , and I needed to kill it , so cancelled the route.

It wouldn't let me enter another address, was greyed out, despite me stopping at the side of the road to re-enter

You have to have the handbrake on to enter a destination.....

I had a Porsche Cayman with the PCM (Porsche Communication management) which costs thousands and the navigation was rubbish in that too. It didn't know about some roads and sent me miles out of my way when I tested it.

What a stupid idea, what if you want your passenger to enter one on the fly as you're driving along ?

Pull the hand brake on one click so the warning light is on the dash but the brake is not actually binding. Car will beep at you but ignore it. Enter the new destination then release the hand brake. "Smart" eh?
