  • Sart 4/2 standard tape unit problem

Purchased my first smart car on Monday ... i brought it knowing the radio unit didnt work.
I was told when a new battery was put in it stopped working so would need the code but he couldnt find it - not the case

Found the code then realised its a different problem

    -Its a radio/tape unit (standard smart/grundig one)
-It lights up when you turn the ignition on ... but thats it

-No writing (safe or code let alone stations) appears its just a lit blank screen bit

    ive tried
    - disconnecting the battery and reconnecting
    - leaving the ignition on for an hour
    - checked the fuses (by the SAM)

Any thoughts on it would be appreciated, thanks!

not seen one for a while, but I'm sure there's a fuse/socket on the backside of the unit apart from any inline ones there may be.

Otherwise you could just have a duff headunit, but remove it and take a look at the rear of for said fuse

Re: Sart 4/2 standard tape unit problem

you don't destroy the dash , just use the appropriate removal tools for the head unit

Mcdonalds stirrers spring to mind for the cass/radio head unit

damn i missed an excuse to go and have a 1/4 pounder with cheese!

As it turns out it was more a slice the dash apart as i used a little knife in the slots in the end (no damage caused)

Seems my tape unit has been in the wars though as at some point its been opened up(seal broke) and on the bottom is written in pen 'no signal, MW , LW' ... my other idea of just find a cheap standard unit to swap in is sounding more and more like a better and easier fix

(cheers for the info and replies! very nice welcome to the forum/club)

... and now im off to buy some masking tape and to raid a car wash as while trying to fix this i found the car is enviromentally friendly and likes to store water in the foot wells

Re: Sart 4/2 standard tape unit problem

was it privately bought (no comeback) or from a dealer (automatic warranty) ?

If you swap it for a normal headunit, any single DIN unit will fit, you'll just need the fascia adaptor to blend it in to the smart dash (it's not perfect though and the thing will stand out more than the std unit)

You also need to reverse the yellow/red connections as smart didn't follow the standard

Make sure you get the inside of the car well dried out.....and then start checking for where the water could be coming in......it's most likely the seals around the windscreen (especially if the screen has been replaced, badly, at some stage?)

Sounds like someone has found the head unit didn't work but just put it back in to sell the car!....Not a very nice trick!

Better option (IMO) is to get an adapter plate (about £12) and fit a new CD player....you may need a wiring adapter as well, if you dont want to mess about with the wiring!

              :goodlk:

non-working am is usually not the radio at fault anyway, rather the aerial or poor adjustment of the AM aerial trimmer

Re: Sart 4/2 standard tape unit problem

brought privatly via ebay so not a lot of come back at all

will scour the net for second hand smart/grundig ones first before buying an after market one ... i only listen to the radio so the rest is wasted on me and they should be cheap and easier to fit (and include the plate thing) (sent one pm already) and as you say will look nicer/not stand out like a sore thumb
*and add me to the list of non AM listeners/cricket players to

concerning the leaks ... just taped all round the bottom of the rear 1/4s, doors and front screen so just have to add water now

Not to sure on the best way to dry the car out but will have a nose around now for ideas

                      cheers you two! much appreciated!

you must have been reading up? although the rear 1/4s are known for leaking the water from them doesn't get as far front as the footwells

If you haven't found it yet, take a look at http://fq101.co.uk/how-to-guides.html
