  • incar footage weird wibbly wobbly effect

I've bought yet another cheap actioncam and had a play with it today, I mounted it to the roof of the tridion via the suction mount that came with it, but when you view the video it makes you feel sick.
Here is a piccy of the camera mounted on the car.

and here is the said video.... sick bags at the ready

anybody know how to cure it, what it is, or am i just going to have to live with it?
    thanks.

Looks to me like the mount is flexing. Think you'll have to get a more sturdy one or have the camera so the car is not in shot, as near objects look like they're moving more.:goodlk:

Thanks Mr T will try that, the mount seems fairly sturdy as the cam is really tiny, but if I angle it up a touch it will just get the road, the roofline is the most wobbly, so with that out the picture it should look better.
        :thanx:

The other thing I can think of is the camera body/lens flexing due to wind buffeting.
Have you tried mounting inside the car, on the back window looking forward, to see if it works there?

Yup tried that, sounds slightly better, but is still wobbly, in fact here is the incar footage, the suction mount is mounted onto the windscreen.

I do have a better action cam that I use for incar footage and have no issues with it, this new one is a lot smaller and I thought it would be ideal on the roof

I'd say it's deffo the mount wobble.
Looks like the image stablising of the camera can't react quick enough.
If you look at the second video you can see the trees on the horizon have the same effect as the dash.
Think you need a more steady mount.

It's not the mount, it's the camera vibrating on top of the chassis. What camera is it? I've got an Oregon Scientific which I shot this with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orjDNTP-TaI

Some of my footage does the same thing.

Quite disappointed Headless Nick, I was hoping for footage of a roadster haunting, ...maybe a headless driver?
Been toying with the idea of using a head-cam, bit like the ones skier's use, might look like a chuffin' loon driving wearing a ski helmet though. I wish you could get a camera that actually films what your eyes see when driving

Seems that the mount is not stable given all the movement through the chassis. I would certainly consider mounting lower on the car.. Not bad quality though for that price!

Wibbly wobbly sorted I think, it was the suction mount with the long plastic rod!
I strapped the camera to the passenger seat like I did with the old cam as I knew that the picture did'nt wobble on that and did a short video and there was no wobble

                        and here's the short video

Thanks for all the advice guys :thanx:

                          Hi,
You could try the following if you can sort out the mounting:-

Using your suction cap to attach to the roof as per your first post, but then have a foam / rubber vibration insulator between it and the cam. That should take out the vibration created movement and the smaller height of the mount should help with the wind created movement.

                          John

Looks great for £20! All you need to do now is record the sound separately with a digital recorder, then match the two on your PC.
