  • Roadster Audio System Upgrade inc. iPhone

    Hello!

Only just purchased my Roadster but of course, since it comes with the standard audio system, it requires urgent upgrading! I quite simply want a clearer and bassier sound. I WON'T be parking up and lifting the boot to show off my tunes though! And I don't have a budget anywhere near £1000's of pounds.

I've been reading round the forums and it seems that changing the following will make a difference:

    - Changing door speakers (built-in tweeters or no?)
    - Adding a compact sub to sit behind the passenger seat
    - Possibly adding headrest speakers (which I've read seem to make a large difference, I'm guessing due to the fact it's right in your ears!)
    - A better head unit.

There's a plethora of options of each, although I'm concerned about what technicalities I need to look out for. I understand a 150w sub for example would be ideal. Can anyone advise me here?

I'm also reading conflicting comments about whether or not to leave or upgrade the head unit??

OK and lastly, I'm a regular iPhone user and listen to all my music through the iPhone itself. In my previous 106, I had a Griffin WindowSeat...

...which allowed me to control what music I wanted to play, as well as use the built-in SatNav. To send the audio signal, I used an FM transmitter. I had to use one which was wired and powered through the cigarette lighter as something like the iTrip would not fit when using the WindowSeat. BUT! I'd much prefer to use the aux/3.5mm cable (better quality and no radio interference) which I have coming out of the back of the Roadster's Grundig head unit, or out of the back of any other unit if I upgrade. So, to minimise wiring dangling down the front of the console, is there a way I can discreetly feed the 3.5mm cable from the back of the head unit and up through the dash somehow? (The cable will then go into the headphone socket of the iPhone)

Or if anyone has any better iPhone solutions, please let me know!

Another thing, when it comes to setting it all up, it's probably best I try and at least have someone who knows what they're doing to help or do the whole thing for me. So if anyone lives locally around Swansea and has experience fitting audio systems into a Roadster, then give me a shout!

Hope this thread isn't too long, looking forward to whatever assistance you can all give!

    Thanks

    Dale

I fitted to my roadster last month:

    Alpine SXE-1325 13cm speakers - £15 - ebay
    Alphine SWD-1600 Sub - £70 - ebay
Kenwood CD player with USB, aux and bluetooth

The speakers and the sub improved the sound loads, the built in speakers have no weight to them, as light as cardboard.

It was all really easy to fit. Had to cut off one of the tabs on the speakers, and used a sharp screw to make a hole for another.

Tweeters - its my understanding (but could be wrong) even though my new speakers have tweeters, the main tweeters being used will still be the standard ones at the front of the car. This is because of the way the ISO wiring is.

Also I have no idea how to fit speakers in the headrests, but am interested in knowing how this is done? I guess you have to split the cable that goes to the door speakers, or find the cable in the ISO plug for rear speakers and cut?

Also there is this cable for connecting a 3.5mm jack to the back of the grundig unit.

Only reason I didnt was because I wanted bluetooth and hands off iPod control.

Hi and thanks for your reply! Much appreciated!

I actually already have a 3.5mm cable connected to the back of the Grundig unit and coming out through the bottom of the centre console.

Just had a look around the web at the kit you installed, looks like you had some bargains though as I can't seem to find anything close to what you paid! If I could find speakers and a sub at the prices you paid, I'd be very happy!! And then I wouldn't mind splashing out on a new head unit. I'm now thinking if I had a new head unit, I could get one with bluetooth like you have to take calls, but also one that has a USB or if not, an aux connection at the rear of the unit so I could somehow feed the cable up through the dashboard. Hmmm.

I just tried searching the web for some info on the headrest speakers but info is sparse!

Theres a few compact acvtive subs on ebay.

          Or - http://www.smartmods.co.uk/index.php?page=details&id=2

My Headunit has the USB and Aux connection at the front, I have a friend that works at halfords, Ill ask him if he knows of any bluetooh head units with aux at the back.
Ive never seen one with USB at the back - to me it would defeat the point, because Ill either have my iPod plugged in, Nexus one, USB stick , or someone elses iPhone/iPod.

Also, Car Audio Security might be able to help.
