    i have a 2002 fortwo .

as i dont use the cigarette lighter , i found it just as easy
to take that out , use the pos & neg wire from that , put
a lighted switch in hole , then run wire from switch ,then
under dashboard though big grommet to running lights.
that way its switchable & on a fused circuit.

By law, DRLs have to switch on with the ignition and switch off when the headlights are turned on. The simplest way to do this is to take an ignition switched feed and run it to the lights through the normally closed contacts of a relay. Energise the relay from the headlight feed and the relay will change state, switching the DRLs off.

Be aware that some DRLs won't work this way as the driver needs a 'jolt' of voltage to start them and on my car, the ignition switched voltage isn't instant from the SAM....

oldgit, thet are not daytime running, and the LED's in the link are not daytime running lights (in my mind)
daytime running lights are what volvos have and if you want daytime running switch them on properly like volvos!

Apparently they don't have to turn off, they only have to dim to a certain level, however this makes it even harder to sort so you may as well make them turn off.

may i just repeat what i said... they are not daytime running lights!
daytime running is where you have your front AND rear lights on... LIKE VOLVOS and vehicles in the scandanavian markets!
i have seen many new vehicles with them LED's driving in the fog without there lights on, just LED's. i think thats dangerous. and also i saw one night, an audi a4 driver was driving with what i thought were his side lights on, looked in my rear view mirror no rear lights!
if you have dip beam on all the time you have no excuse for not switching your lights on, as they are on all the time.

European law specifies DRLs as LED lamps showing to the front of the car only.... You are quite right, they are not a substitute for head lights or fog lights - which can only legally be used in certain conditions, not all the time as some people think! LEDs are specified for DRLs as the current is low, so emissions are kept low.

Incorrect, DRLs are front lights only. Different manufacturers implement them differently.

so enlighten me as to why volvos have dip beam on all the time and in scandanavian countries thet have dip beam on and not the LED's?
i still stand by what i have said, dip beam is daytime running.

Whilst I agree with you that the silly little LEDs (or stupidly bright in some cases) aren't really what I'd consider to be a DRL, if that's what they are now classed as, sold as, used as etc, you can't really categorically state that they are not DRLs, you might as well argue that black is white.......

They are both forms of daytime running lights!

Quite a few of the uk ones are now just using standard filament sidelights

The only difference is that the new EU legislation only requires front lights whereas it seems in Sweden than both frog and rear

In the future, there will be more new drls than Swedish ones and the new ones will become the standard

Not worth getting worried about really

have a look at the cars in the us...they have their indicators on constantly - low beam.

are you saying by that that they're not daytime running lights?

the whole point of drl's is so the front of the car is 'seen' given the amount of drivers on the road that just pull out without a care in the world...
