  • Little Audio advice required please

    Hiya Guys

Ok, Sidle (whos guide is excellent btw!) pointed me in the right direction, and I have decided to take his advice, and plump for a JL Audio XD400/4 400w amp

I own a 2004 plate Roadster, and have fitted a JVC AVX44 which is also running a 120 GB Solid State HD LOL ........... loads of music

Now, the trouble im having is speaker choice. I wanted to ask you if you had any thoughts on keeping to the JL Audio all the way, or whether other speakers would be better suited?

There is a nice JL Component set ive looked at, JL Audioi Evolution C2 and the speaker sizes are correct I believe at 5.25 so does anyone know whether these will be ok as i saw somewhere they cannot be over 60mm deep??

Any thoughts appreciated before I blow my cash

    Cheers!

Wire length depends upon position of the amp. I would be mounting it under the dash or near the tire repair stuff, and dynamite. Enough to do door skin inner and round where the speaker goes, so for a roadster I would say 3 sheets would be plenty. Plus the 400/4 is one of the greatest small amps on the Market today.

            1 box of dynamat extreme
1 pair of mids (your choice)
1 4 gauge amplifier wiring kit
you'll also need some speaker cable, idealy you want to run the wire from the amplifier to the speaker direct, no breaks in it

you'll also, with any spare wire you'll be likely to have, want to upgrade your battery earth and engine earth...might as well use the scrap rather than bin it!

Make sure you keep the gains turned all the way down for the first few weeks, and don't turn the volume up on the headunit to more than 3/4 of it's total output.

this is to ensure that the speakers wear in properly (just as you would take it easy if you had a new engine) and the volume limit is to ensure that you do not play any distortion through your speakers as it'll cause them to blow...something you don't want happening, even if JL Audio are one of, if not the best for customer service within the industry

however, whilst not to slate JL audio (I will be running a 10w7 from a hd900/5 myself in the next few weeks) I personally do not like how their speakers sound, (having heard the c2, and c3's). I chose a set of hertz high energy speakers and will be running them active, (as they are component speakers - the tweeter is separate, each will be amplified separately).

the 5.25" component c2's have a rrp of 199.99 inc vat...for that budget, you can get a set of hertz high energies for about £50 more

the 5.25" coaxil c2's are going for £119.99...and you can get a set of hertz high energies for £150, a set of diamond d3's for £94.99

you just need to work out if you want coaxil or component first and then go speaker hunting from there.

but i strongly urge you to go to your nearest local sound shop, and as to have a listen to their stands and get an idea for what you prefer (some people like their highs harsh, while others like them more relaxed etc)

and don't forget to push for a discount! these products have good margins on them!

All true, Although if you go c2 remember you will need to go amp- crossover - speaker. :-)

And if not c2 Boston make some lovely speakers

i'd personally say run the system active. crossovers from what i've read are highly inefficient and over 50% of the power from the amplifier is lost through the crossover components...my sole reason for not using crossovers for my system.

however, if a crossover is used, then there is a spare 2 channels for either rear speakers or a subwoofer...but to the op...whatever you do...keep that amp! it's brilliant!

wow thanks guys, some good advice... even if I dont know what it all means LMMFAO

Ok here is my sum total of speaker knowledge... so go easy on me ok!

I understand that component speakers have the main mid speaker is that right? plus a tweeter?

They have that box of tricks as well, is this called the cross over?

My aim was to try and NOT have a sub, I dont think if I get a decent set of speakers I will need it will I?? Hypothetically lol... maybe... lol

So, you lost me a bit on system active and crossovers..... so a noob proof explanation if you could lol

Da_Glu... dont suppose you have any pics on your installation do you??

Re: Little Audio advice required please

The speakers come with a box called a cross over, this box has been made to work with those speakers, so for sake of simplicity use the crossover and follow instructions in the box, :-)

for simplicity....keep the crossover, but you will have 2 channels free to use

you're right with the whole component theory...and if your budget is such, go for a pair of components rather than coaxil's...with it, you can have the tweeter point sourced(facing you) so you get better imaging(the whole idea that you're not listening to a recording, but actually live)

my install has not even begun! i'm waiting on all my equipment to arrive before i put it's fitted, (i have the dynamat, speakers and signal processor, just waiting on my amp and sub)...however i did some dynamatting yesterday...

if i were you, id either have an 8" subwoofer such as the jl 8w3, or have a set of rear speakers. Purely as you have an amplifier that can do it, so you might as well! not to mention that you're going to be asking a 5.25" speaker to play mids and lows if you don't go for a subwoofer or some bigger midrange speakers...it's a lot to ask from a small speaker in my opinion.

                      :goodlk:
