This is how I installed a digital media player with USB and SD card input into our smart, before going further, this was done to meet our needs, which were simply to have all our music on either USB flash drive or SD card, and run it using the standard stereo fitted with a Smartmods AUX lead, and using the standard smart speakers, and to do it without much modification and on the cheap.
It doesn't give amazing sound quality, though it is the same as a CD or radio played through the standard system, as such, audiophiles or people running big speakers and subs might want to look at other options.
But this is how i did it:
Firstly i got a cheap MP3 player with USB and SD input from Hong Kong via Ebay, i had already decided to try and fit it into the drawer under the stereo, this allowed me to use the smartmods lead and have power from the 12v socket close;

Next was to pull it apart to see how i could fit it all together, as you can see, the casing is far larger than the gubbins inside, which is basically i couple of circuit boards.

Seeing as the front facia held the buttons and screen, it seemed easiest to mount this directly onto the drawer front, this retained all the original borad, button and screw fix points, so after some careful marking up, it was out with the dremel and hacksaw blades...

I cut a template out of the front, and some out of the drawer bottom to allow clearance, in retrospect, i didn't need to cut as much as i did, but thats just part and parcel of custom fitting things!
So with the hole cut, it was time for a test mount, followed by power, after finding the + and - on the board, i soldered some wire onto the contacts to give a power feed from the 9-12v power input

The fitting was quite good for a first attempt, and it seemed the silver oval would fit in nicely with the stereo facia, this left me with the dilemma of how to mount the rear board, after much deliberation i decided the easiest way was just to glue it in place using some Araldite, the drawer already had a small cutout at the back for the aux lead, so i opened it up a bit and made a basic clip to stop the wire pulling...
I think i may have upset the post with too many pics, as it won't upload any more, if someone could enlighten me as to the best way to get the rest on, i'll complete the guide...
