• Tow Bar

I cannot believe I am the only one, so who else has had a tow bar fitted to their Smart

I have one fitted to carry my fishing kit.

I haven't got a tow bar, but consider having one fitted from time to time, for a very light trailer, to carry bulk rather than weight.

Can you supply any details of yours Richard?

smart-r-us will supply towbars - towing does void your insurance though.

How are you allowed to drive the car if the tow bar voids the insurace? Or do you have to have to negociate with the insurance company?

I would look into it very carefully, as there is an EC Directive which covers towbars.

There was a thread about this a while ago, http://www.funkysmart.co.uk/topic.as...cs+only+Please

                    Hi Alsmart

All I can tell you is that with the fitting of the tow bar on the wifes car and the cost of the trailer the bill cam to about £400.

It is a small trailer, to give you some idea of price Halfords do the same one in three sizes, ours is the same as the smallest.

                    Hope this helps.

                      Hi Daveyjp

It seems strange that a Smart Car cannot tow a trailer, motercycles can?

Which agency type apprves cars for trailers.

                        Hi Timph

                        I wish

I needed a replacement for a motorcycle and did not want a car, but needed the space to carry my fishing kit. It fits in Ladybug fine, the problem is it causes too much mess, and we don't want a messy Smart do we, hence the trailer.

Richard C - the smart isnt a motorbike and smart is not alone in not being approved to tow. Ford Ka and Audi TT are two others, I'm sure there are more. I would imagine it will be part of the EU single type approval system.

If the EC directive means lives are saved from people not using dodgy tow bars that seems OK to me.

                            For info try http://www.vca.gov.uk/index.shtm

more to the point, DC dont approve the smart for towing, therefore I would think that apart from insurance problems there could be construction and use issues with the police.
