• Which books can't you put down?

Re the chat in the bad movie topic and the reference to books I thought hmm why not

So which books /Author are a must for yourselves, ie you see a new one on the shelf and must have etc, or check up when their next one is released?

Top of the pile for me in descending order

1 Alistair Reynolds - scifi
2 Terry Pratchett - fantasy
3 David Zindell - Scifi and now Fantasy

that'll do for starters otherwise I'll be here all day!

Pratchett rules for me

Night Watch is one of the best books I've ever read and definately Pratchetts best so far.

Pratchett is the one for me, currently reading Hat Full Of Sky. I also read Bill Brysons travel books.

Already ordered the next Pratchett (Going Postal), not due out until October.

Has to be as follows for me
1.Terry pratchett
2.David Gemmell
3.Alexander Kent/Douglas Reeman
JRR Tolkien is obviously above being included in such a Poll, but is so far off the top had to have a mention.

Andy is right JRR Tolkein is first by a whole furlong,

As for mere mortal authors,

Wilbur Smith - Fantasy generally with an African twist
Douglas Adams - Sci Fi

Not sure who else, I havent read another amazing authors work recently there have been alot of good ones but none who have made me want to read their books.

I pick up Top20 books in the local supermarket. Usually they are impulse purchases and cost less than £4. Sometimes they are a good read, other times a waste of ink and paper. I highly recommend "The Havana Room" by Colin Harrison. Had me enthraled from start to finish

Harry Potter. . .
He should have missed the train!!!This whole series of books i feel is a blatant excersise in Renenvue manipulation!!!What ever Happened to Jennings,Stig of the Dump,Emil and the detectives? They werent warlocks or Wizards, but just ordinary kids in a believeable plot, bring em all back(i regularly read them still esspecially the Jennings ones)
