  • Brakes replacement!!

Hi, I need to repalce the discs and pads on the all four wheels, Mecedes manchester quoted me £600, £311 for the parts.
i think it is a bit expensive.
Just wondering if everyone is getting the the brackes discs and pads from the Mecedes?
Does the stuff from smarttune or ebay offer similar quality? The original set I manged 43K miles which seems to be very good.

Just go to your local motor factors...... tell them what you want and fit them yourself.....

Brake pads & discs are standard(ish) parts. A local garage should be able to sort you out, either go to your local motorfactor (like fudge says) and get the correct part then fit them yourself or get a garage to do it.

have a look over on forfour owner at this thread........

              its all about non-standard brakes!!

TBH - its really easy to fit discs and pads - even for a novice!! prob take you 45mins per wheel max!!

OR just go to an indipendent - but their hourly rate is now about £50/hr!!

As Fudge said, buy the parts from a motor factor or one of the online smart indi's, fit yourself or go to a local garage. My local garage charged me £23 labour to fit EBC discs and pads to my roadie. If I remember right when I got them to fit EBC discs and pads all round on my for four it cost about £250 parts and fitting.

                    Re: Brakes replacement!!

The EBC Ultimax discs are very good. Helen and I both have them on our Roadster's with no problems. Remember, they don't stay black for very long!! However, they do stay black on the edges and as such, corrosion is slowed down.

Some insurance providers do want to know if you have performance brakes - most don't really care. It didn't make any difference to my renewal with MSM.

                      Re: Brakes replacement!!

Your car is made of the cheapest bits available - if you buy branded replacements they'll almost certainly be of higher quality than the MCC **** it come with. If you can get them for the 44 buy some Ferodo disks and slightly softer fast road pads (they'll wear the disks more slowly) - they're significantly better than the cheaper EBC and the likes (which I have ) and cost a good deal less than Merc.

40k from rears seems low - are you sure they need doing?

My local tyre place fitted front disks and pads (I supplied) for £40 when I needed it doing fast before France.

Rules of paying for work (if you must):

                      1: Supply parts.
                      2: Haggle.
3: Avoid Mercedes like the plague.

                        Re: Brakes replacement!!

thanks for the help. I think the rear one do need replace. Actually 44k is not bad for the brake pads but not that much for the discs, isn't it?
I actually drive very gentally, I never brake hard.
What pads are softer fast road pads? The can't find any disc or pads that suit the 44 apart from the EBC 1407 ones. Anyone can help?? Cheers

                          Re: Brakes replacement!!

My brabus forfour discs and pads are 40% worn @ 40,000miles. I'm still running the ones which left the factory. I put this mostly down to my driving style of not being keen to brake and the low lkerb weight of the forfour

                              Re: Brakes replacement!!

Our Fourfor has only about 6000k's on the clock and there is already visible wear on the discs, i.e., you can see the lip formed by the pad wear.
Is this unusual? are the discs that soft?
                              Thanks,
                              Keith
