  • Valve adjustments - 1.3 petrol engine (4A)

    Hi everybody,

I am a new owner of a forfour with 1.3 petrol engine.

I had some problems with the exhaust gasses, checked the engine in a service shop and it showed that I need new cylinders.

I have bought them, and since this is sort of engine overhaul, I am interested on what value the valves need to be set?

I hope I have explained my question precisely enough, english is not my mother language

    cheers

P.S. its 4A9 engine, i made a mistake in the title...

lol, 450eur for spare parts only

liners are not sold separately, only altogether with cylinders... got them from mercedes benz service (and i'm waiting a full month for them cuz the central spare parts warehouse for entire territory of Europe does not have them on stock)...

so, when the new cylinders (with liners) are instaled, the valves have to be readjusted. the question is on what value (or something like that)?

if the bores are knackered, surely you're changing pistons too ?

and the 'cylinders' would be the block surely?

Haven't got much data on the forfour (and anyway not the valve clearance data) , but you might need some of these anyway:

          Cylinder head 24.5Nm +2x90degree
          Cylinder head cover 8.0Nm
          Oil pan 7.5Nm
          Oil filter 14.0Nm
          Oil filter connection 27.0Nm
          Oil intake bell 8.5Nm
          Water pump 8.5Nm
          Timing case cover M6 8.5Nm
          Timing case cover M10 39.0Nm
Intake manifold/bracket for intake manifold in engine block 18.5Nm
          Exhaust manifold 34.0Nm
          Spark plugs 25.0Nm

...... although you may find this document rather useful >> http://lancer-club.ru/data/faq/2008/...LancerX-TO.pdf
makes specific mention of your engine with tappet adjustment detailed on page 2-9 (pdf page 33-34 etc)
Just search within the PDF for '4A9' and you'll get there

Just realised the adjustment is 'old school' swapping in varying thickness tappet body, you have to do calculations based on current parts and then choose one of 31 different sized tappet bodies to make the difference within spec. You may be able to use some of the old ones if they are the right size, otherwise you have to order in new ones to suit your engine once measured.

my bad, by cylinders i meant pistons, and by liners i meant piston rings...

              finally got it right

                makes more sense now

as you remove and refit the head with a new gasket, the tappet adjustments will all obviously change, which is why you need to readjust.

:goodlk: you'll need a couple of visits to the smart dealer to pick up the tappet sizes you require,... when you've nearly finished the job, you can't pre-order as you don't know what sizes you'll need at this stage.

Okies, so I got new piston rings finally installed, drove around 1000km and there are not problems (yet), the car is behaving just fine

The only bad experience I had was when ordering part from official Mercedes office in Belgrade. The problem was that there were no spare pistons in the central Mercedes warehouse for the entire Europe, so I had to wait until they get them made and delivered by their production plants... So this might pose a problem in the future - lack of spare parts and a looong time needed to get them delivered...

Tnx to all for the support, have fun with your Smarts

How did you get on with the tappet clearance shims?

were they expensive, and did you need a lot of them in the end to do yours?

well i would like to help, but a mechanic was doing all the work.

as for spare parts, costs were around EUR 95 for 1 new piston with rings (X4), another EUR 50 for 16 valve rubber thingis, 35 EUR for that insulator thing when the engine is put together and EUR 2 for screws that are attaching bottom part of the pistons to the engine. also, add to that EUR 350 for the mechanic's work. on the other hand, the fun of driving a 1.3 petrol engine forfour is priceless

again, excuse my bad technical english
